During the Great Depression, she and her family migrated to her mother's birthplace, the community of Homeplace in Plaquemines, about 60 miles away from New Orleans, which was about 60 miles away from New Orleans. (Note: According to some reports, she was either born or grew up in Happy Jack, Louisiana, as well as in Plaquemines.)

She skipped several grades in elementary school and graduated at the age of 15. The family used the funds from her brother Sig's World War Two G.I. Bill is a student at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she graduated at age 19 with honors in chemistry and physics.
