David Edgerton Career

Career

After starting out as an apprentice and serving in the Army, he decided against becoming a restaurateur. After graduating from Cornell University, he launched his attempt to become a baker, which was mainly students on campus. He began working accounting for Albert Picks Hotel Group, a Chicago hotel chain.

He returned to Florida to become the manager of Howard Johnson's Restaurants, which had locations in Miami and Orlando. When he first encountered business partner and Cornell University alumnus James McLamore, he became interested in opening a Dairy Queen with a burger section. They created Insta-Burger King, the forerunner of the Burger King model of fast service, limited menu, and low prices. Customers arrived in the restaurant to pay for orders in advance, as opposed to the common practice of carhops greeting customers personally and carrying their orders to their cars. In 1957, Burger King began selling the Whopper burger, but the firm also dropped the word "Insta" from the name. Edgerton, who was fed with Insta's issues, designed the flame broiler, which would be Burger King's signature flavor.

McLamore negotiated national rights to Burger King in 1961 and then began to expand throughout the country. In 1962, McLamore and Edgerton established two support companies: Distron and Davmor Industries. All the stores' food distribution center was distronified. Davmor Industries was the manufacturing plant that manufactured all of the kitchen equipment for each new store.

Burger King's business was expanding, but organic growth became impossible in keeping up as McDonald's went public in 1965. In 1967, the pair sold the 274 store chain to Pillsbury in an effort to grow under the name.

Edgerton left the Burger King company after it was sold and opened the Bodega Steakhouse chain, which had locations throughout Florida, Chicago, Detroit, and Dallas until selling it in 1978.

Edgerton opened more restaurants in San Francisco and Monterey in 1985, before acquiring stakes in three Fuddruckers Restaurants in 1993.

He also served on Avantcare, Inc.'s advisory board.
