Denise Nicole White (born May 22, 1975), also known as AverySunshine, is an American singer, songwriter, and pianist.
Early life and education
Ruth Eleanor White and Irving Cyril White were born in Chester, Pennsylvania, to Ruth Eleanor White and Irving Cyril White. She began playing piano at 8, after she saw a classmate perform and learned to read hymns before starting to study classical music at 11. At 13, she expanded her repertoire to include jazz and gave her first recital. Sunshine, her aunt, a church choir director, asked Sunshine to accompany her at a Sunday service at a Catholic church; she was later recruited by churches of all denominations, including the AME Church, where she appeared with the award-winning Wilmington/Chester Mass Choir.
In 1993, White, who sang in her high school choir, graduated from the Country Day School of the Sacred Heart in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. She attended Spelman College in Atlanta, and although she registered as a piano major, she changed direction after becoming disillusioned with the music program. Sunshine earned a degree in philosophy in 1998.
Personal life
White lives in Atlanta, Georgia. She is the mother of two children, Drew, a niece, and Evan. Dana Johnson, a white woman, married her guitarist Dana Johnson on April 3, 2016.
Career
Maia Nkenge Wilson, a vocal major, was a student at a local college, and the pair formed DaisyRew, a gospel and R&B singing pair. DaisyRew performed in Africa and at clubs, including the Apache Café, which was recognized for launching the careers of many prominent artists, including India.Arie, in addition to performing in Africa. Following college, Wilson was cast in a Broadway role, and Sunshine was hired as the Minister of Music at the St. Paul AME Church in Atlanta. DaisyRew continued to perform until Wilson, who was on breaks from her stage appearance in New York, returned to Atlanta.
White had the privilege of meeting Dana Johnson, a guitarist, composer, and songwriter who had previously worked with India. In addition to directing DaisyRew's career, White, Johnson, and Wilson began working together in 2003, writing and producing the music. Wilson appeared in a Broadway play the next day, and she departed for New York. AverySunshine was then adopted by White, who later referred to it as AverySunshine.
White and Johnson released "Stalker," a neo soul song that a friend, Chris Brann, beat in 2005, which attracted a house beat. The track became a hit on a Japanese record label, sparking a sequence of live dates in Japan.
White and Johnson began work on AverySunshine's self-titled debut album, which was released in 2010 under their own brand, BigShine. The album, which was mainly at White's home with ProTools, featured guest appearances by pianist Takana Miyamoto, vibraphone artist Roy Ayers, and Christian McBride. The media lauded the work, with USA Today describing it as "refreshingly original" and The Washington Post describing it as "a radiant brand of soul." White, a single mother of two, concentrated on AverySunshine, but also took on jobs as a keyboard player with artists such as Tyler Perry and Jennifer Holliday, as a choral director for Atlanta performances by artists like Michael Bublé, Anthony Hamilton, and David Foster. AverySunshine toured extensively from 2010 to late 2013 and gained a following across the United States, Europe, and Africa. They began recording The Sunroom in November 2013, which was released in May 2014 through a joint venture with Shanachie Records. Twenty Sixty Four, her third album, was released in 2017.
