Myanmar's detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi, 78, is moved to house arrest over heatstroke fears - three years after she was locked up in prison following military coup

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 17, 2024
Suu Kyi, 78, has been detained by the Myanmar military since it overthrew her government in a 2021 coup. She has been moved from prison to house arrest, a spokesperson for the military government told media. In February, her son Kim Aris said she was being held in solitary confinement and that she was in good spirits 'even if her health is not as good as it was in the past'.

Sean Turnell, an Australian scholar, recounts the agony of spending 650 days in Insein Prison in Yangon

When her government was deposed in a coup, Australian professor Sean Turnell had been advising Myanmar's democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi on economic policy. The 57-year-old was arrested and sentenced to a string of prisons, including the notorious Insein jail. Turnell was jailed for midnight interrogations, forced to live with rats and scorpions, and defend himself against ridiculous allegations that he was an agent for the M16. Turnell recited world leaders, named the 50 US states in his head, and read Enid Blyton's children's books to keep himself sane. The self-described nerdy academic has now chronicled his experiences in his book The Unlikely Prisoner.

Aung San Suu Kyi's fears have risen as she requires 'urgent care' in jail after 'vomitting and severe dizziness,' but the Myanmar military junta denied her treatment

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 6, 2023
According to her British son, Aung San Suu Kyi needs "urgent care" in jail after 'vomitting and extreme dizziness, but the military junta refused her care, which forced her out of office. Fears about the Myanmar democracy leader's health are on the increase, as she has been left in such distress by gum disease drugs that she has been unable to digest. According to local reports, prison authorities turned down a plea for private care for the 78-year-old, which was refused. Kim Yaris (inset), the youngest child of her mother's London family, has now petitioned with the military authorities to encourage his ailing mother to be hospitalized. Since Suu Kyi's deposition and arrest in February 2021, General Min Aung Hlaing (right), the military junta's leader, has ruled Myanmar.
