Club career
Williams, a boy from Wolverhampton, West Midlands, began his playing days with West Bromwich Albion as a youth player, but the club was released at the age of 16. He continued to play for non-league Hednesford Town.
In late 2003, he joined Stockport County Williams later became captain of Stockport and was still at the club when he made his international debut for Wales. Williams received both the inaugural North-West League Two Player of the Year Award and the North-West Player of the Year Award in November 2007.
Williams signed for Swansea City on loan until the 2007-08 season, with the intention of a permanent transfer. For the first time in 24 years, Swansea made the change permanent for a reported £400,000, a club record transfer fee at the time.
In a 1–1 draw against Derby County on September 16, Williams scored his first Swansea goal. During his first season at Championship level, the defender excelled, later being named Wales Footballer of the Year at an FAW awards dinner in November 2009. Williams, who had been serving as a second-half replacement while captaining the team in the final at Wembley, lifted the trophy with club captain Garry Monk.
After Monk stepped down from his duties as captain for the majority of Swansea's matches during the previous two seasons, Williams was named club captain for the remainder of the team's games. In Everton's 2–1 Europa League group stage home loss to Lyon on October 19, 2017, Williams scored for the second time. He was also suspended in the match for pounding Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes into an advertising board, sparking a brawl involving both players and Everton supporters. Everton boss Ronald Koeman said Williams had to work on his self-control after the match.
Williams joined Stoke City on loan from August 2nd, 2018–19 season. He made his debut nine days with Brentford in a 1–1 home draw, swapping the injured Bruno Martins Indigo after 26 minutes. He was suspended in a 3–0 loss to Wigan Athletic on August 22nd. Williams played 37 times for Stoke throughout the season, scoring once in a 2–2 draw with Norwich City on April 22, 2019.
Williams was released by Everton at the end of the 2018–19 season.

International career

Williams was named in Coleman's 23-man squad for UEFA Euro 2016, Wales' first major tournament in more than a half-century on May 31. Wales defeated Belgium 3–1 in the quarterfinals on July 1st, beating Belgium in the equalizing goal. Wales lost 2–0 to Portugal in the semi-finals.
Williams earned 86 caps for Wales and two goals with his last cap coming in June 2019 in a 1–0 away loss to Hungary.
