Ashley Nicole Rickards (born May 4, 1992) is an American actress, known for her role as Jenna Hamilton in the MTV comedy-drama series Awkward, and as Samantha "Sam" Walker, a troubled young girl in The CW's teen drama series One Tree Hill.
She also starred in the 2011 independent drama film Fly Away as Mandy, a severely autistic girl.
Early life and acting career
Rickards was born in Sarasota, Florida. She grew up on a horse farm that catered to children with special needs. At age 13, she had her first glimpse at acting in an opera performance. Rickards graduated from high school at the age of fifteen and is a member of Mensa. Rickards traveled to Los Angeles after being invited by Lou Pearlman to a local talent showcase, where she eventually assembled a team of representatives. Rickards started appearing in a variety of minor careers after graduation, although child labor laws limited the number of hours she was allowed to work. Samantha Walker, a runaway foster child, starred in the sixth season of The CW's One Tree Hill after making a number of guest appearances and shorts. Rickards discovered that she "learned so much from acting techniques to new ways of shooting stuff" before being unaware of the program's existence before auditioning. Her character did not return to television in the following year, although she did appear in Gamer's first feature film in the same year.
When a planned lead role in the film Dirty Girl fell through, Rickards spent a significant portion of 2009 attending auditions. She appeared alongside Jimmy Smits in an episode of the legal drama Outlaw in 2010, as well as auditioning for the lead role in MTV's Awkward. Adam Griffin, her manager, initially turned down, told the producers a tape Rickards had made for Fly Away "to show her how she can do something." During Fly Away, an MTV series in which she played a girl with significant autism, the actress obtained both roles and filmed the pilot.
Rickards' profile in Awkward began to rise, and she was also given the opportunity to script an episode. In 2012, she appeared in the moderately popular comedy Struck by Lightning and another coming-of-age film Sassy Pants. Rickards stepped into the horror genre in 2014, with a lead role in At the Devil's Door and as a teenage daughter in A Haunted House 2. She appeared on Awkward's fifth and final seasons in 2015. In August 2016, Rickards will appear in the CW series The Flash's Rosalind "Rosa" Dillon/The Top.
