Arthur Ashe Life

Arthur Robert Ashe Jr. (July 10, 1943-February 6, 1993) was an American professional tennis player who won three Grand Slam titles. Ashe was the first black player to be selected to the United States Davis Cup team and the first black man to win the singles competition at Wimbledon, the US Open, and the Australian Open.

In 1980, he retired.

He was ranked World No. 1 on the charts. 1 by Harry Hopman in 1968 and Lance Tingay of The Daily Telegraph and World Tennis Magazine in 1975.

He ranked No. 158 in the ATP computer rankings at No. 1. Ashe is thought to have contracted HIV from a blood transfusion he received during heart bypass surgery in the early 1980s.

In April 1992, Ashe publicly declared his illness and began educating others about HIV and AIDS.

He created the Arthur Ashe Foundation for AIDS and the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health before his death from AIDS-related pneumonia at the age of 49. Ashe was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by US President Bill Clinton on June 20, 1993.

Personal life

Ashe attended photographer and graphic artist Jeanne Moutoussamy at a United Negro College Fund benefit in October 1976. Moutoussamy, a mix of Indo-Guadeloupean and African-American heritage, is the granddaughter of architect John Moutoussamy. They were married in the Church Center for the United Nations in New York City on February 20, 1977, in a service presided by Andrew Young, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations.

Ashe and Moutoussamy adopted Camera, their daughter's name, after her mother's profession.

From 1958 to 1979, the Romanian was a professional tennis player on the national circuit, winning the 1970 French Open in the men's doubles as his best show in the sport - defeating Arthur Ashe's partnership. He also reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon in the doubles, winning 22 titles in pairs and 26 in singles, as well as 34 titles as a singles player. His earnings on the court were modest, compared to players like Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer, and it was his achievements since hanging up his racquet that changed his life.
