Life and career

Smith was born in East Orange, New Jersey, United States. In Jonathan Larson's Rent, she appeared as Mimi. She was also the poster girl for Rent, and she was featured on taxi cabs in New York City and across the country. She left Mimi's role to record her album and extend her film career.

Smith made her television debut in Sidney Lumet's 100 Centre Street as a teen heroin user.

In Notorious, based on the life of Evans' late husband, rapper The Notorious B.I.G., Smith played Faith Evans. She has received rave reviews. The Los Angeles Times called her "delicious in the role," while Rolling Stone said she was "terrific."

In the action film Abduction starring Taylor Lautner and Alfred Molina, Smith played CIA agent Sandra Burns. Mola O'Hara appeared in the film Yelling to the Sky with Zoe Kravitz and Gabourey Sidibe and Jason Clarke in the same year. She appeared in the Golden Globe-nominated film Across the Universe and appeared on HBO's Bored to Death.

She appeared in the TV One romantic comedy Stock Option, which attracted record numbers for the network. On his 2012 album Life Is Good, Nasty refers to Smith. In the video for the song, she appeared as a cameo. Smith appeared in Rick Ross' "Amsterdam" music video, which gained over 8 million viewers in its first two days of release. "Amsterdam" is Ross' album "God Forgives, I Don't" it is.

On 9:23 Music Group, Smith's debut single, "Hold Up Waiting a Minute (Woo Woo), was released. The video was directed by Larenz Tate and co-star Lance Gross and Vine, and was released on Essence Online on December 2, 2014. At the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, the single was nominated for the Best Traditional R&B Performance.

Love Is Everything, which was launched by Kickstarter in 2012 and raised over $50,000 in 30 days from her supporters, was released in 2015.
