Anthony Crivello Life

Anthony Crivello (born August 2, 1955) is an American actor and singer.

He has appeared in the original cast of a number of Broadway shows, including Les Misérables, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Golden Boy, Marie Christine, and The News.

In 1993, he won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance as Valentin in Kiss of the Spider Woman.

Early life

Crivello was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Josephine (née Mussomeli) and Vincent J. Crivello. He graduated from Saint Thomas More High School in 1973 and was inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame in 1995. In the Milwaukee area, he appeared in productions at Sunset Playhouse directed by Alan Furlan. He married actress Dori Rosenthal on May 14, 2005, and they have two children together.

Crivello is a member of the Dramatic Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America.

He has been a member of the Actors Studio (NYC/LA). Tony Greco, Estelle Parsons, Harvey Keitel, Barbara Bain, Martin Landau, as well as Michael Howard, Terry Schenkel, and Mary H. Strong are among his former acting tutors. Anne Perillo/DePaul University has been his vocal coach for more than thirty years. Del Close, a comedian, performed comedies in Chicago's historic The Second City.

Crivello is an Honored Member of Marquette University's Centuries of Scholarship. He was named recipient of the 2003 Communicator of the Year Award at Marquette University's College of Speech & Communications. He is listed in Who's Who's Who in America, and he is a member of the Saint Thomas More High School Alumni Hall of Fame. With his likeness on a plaque at Johnston Hall in the Diederich College of Communication on the campus of Marquette University, he was inducted into the Marquette University Hall of Fame. On the walls of the famed Sardi's Restaurant in New York City, a portrait of his likeness can be found. He has had the honor of being included in four films by New York Times caricature artist Al Hirschfeld.

Crivello, the host of his own radio show on FOX SPORTS/ 920 AM Las Vegas in 2008, was named Tony Crivello and the Sicilians. Mr. Crivello has also appeared on ESPN2 as a ring announcer and commentator for ESPN2's Kickboxing Championships, as well as owning Green Bay Packers stock.

He appeared in Mandy Patinkin's original Broadway revival in 1981 as a substitute for Mandy Patinkin, gaining critical acclaim in his role as "Che" on Broadway, earning him further praise.

He appeared Off-Broadway in Wendy Kesselman's The Juniper Tree and Shakespeare's Measure For Measure directed by Mark Lamos shortly after.

He appeared in the Broadway musical The News as "the Killer." He appeared on Broadway in Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg's Les Misérables for filmmakers Trevor Nunn and John Caird and producer Cameron Mackintosh, first as Grantaire and then as Javert, ten months later. (He'll appear Grantaire again at the Royal Albert Hall in a special tenth-anniversary performance.) He continued to appear on Broadway as "Valentin" in the Kander and Ebb Terrence McNally musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, which was also nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore Award while in try-outs in Toronto. Crivello was named as "Best Featured Actor in a Musical" on Broadway in 1993. In 1999, he appeared in Michael John LaChiusa's Marie Christine, directed by Graciela Daniele at The Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theater. He received a Los Angeles Ovation Award nomination, a Garland Award nomination, a Robby Award nomination, and a L.A. For Do I Hear a Waltz, Drama Critics Award nomination for "Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actor in a Musical" was nominated. He appeared in the Goodman Theater of Chicago's production of The House Of Martin Guerre, for which he received the Joseph Jefferson Award of Chicago for his portrayal of Martin Guerre. In August 2005, he appeared at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, California, as part of Marsha Norman and Lucy Simon's experimental interpretation of Boris Pasternak's Boris Pasternak book, which was directed by Des McAnuff. He appeared in the Geffen Playhouse's version of The Underpants, directed by John Rando, as well as David Ives' interpretation of A Flea in Her Ear for the Chicago Shakespeare Theater directed by Gary Griffin for whom he received his second Joseph Jefferson Award nomination. He was one of two actors to change in the title role in the Las Vegas production of The Phantom of the Opera in 2006. He was later discovered to be the sole actor portraying the Phantom. He appeared in over 2,400 shows since his closing in September 2012.

Tony Shalhoub, Seth Numrich, and Michael Aronov directed by Bartlett Sher on the 75th anniversary celebration of Clifford Odets' Golden Boy at the Belasco Theatre in New York City, produced by Lincoln Center Theater in 2012. He appeared in the Kevin Murphy / Laurence O'Keefe cult at New World Stages in New York in 2014 and directed by Andy Fickman.

Crivello appeared in producer Hershey Felder's production of Louis and Keely Live at the Sahara, directed by Taylor Hackford and written by Vanessa Claire Stewart and Jake Broder in 2015 and 2016. The musical was performed at the Royal George Theatre in Chicago, as well as the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. Keely Smith appeared in Louis Prima's 'Las Vegas Lounge Legend'. In 2017, Crivello portrayed late Marquette University's Naismith Basketball Hall Of Fame 1977 NCAA championship coach / NBC broadcaster Al McGuire in the Milwaukee Repertory Theater one man play McGuire, written by HOF broadcaster Dick Enberg. Crivello received critical praise for his participation in the show and was named "Outstanding Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play" at the 2017 Wisconsin Footlights Award. McGuire's five-minute presentation at the University Of Wisconsin Field House on May 20, 2017. In a relaunched new touring production in 2022 at Milwaukee's Next Act Theatre, directed by Bob Rech and Rech Entertainment, Crivello reprised his award-winning appearance in "Mcguire."

In Ernest Hemingway's "The Old Man" Santiago, adapted for the stage by A. E. Hotchner and Tim Hotchner, Crivello portrayed "The Old Man" Santiago, directed by Ronald Allan-Lindblom and produced by RWS Entertainment Group of New York City/Long Island City, received critical adoration for his performance.

In Stephen Sondheim's "Into The Woods," directed by Robert Longbottom, Crivello made his Hollywood Bowl debut as "The Mysterious Man" in a star studded cast.

He has appeared on comedy improv Off-Broadway and is a resident company alum of Chicago City Limits in New York City.

Crivello began acting in two films, including Crocodile Dundee II opposite Paul Hogan in 1988 and Shakedown opposite Sam Elliott. He appeared in MGM film Spellbinder, directed by Janet Greeks, opposite Tim Daly and Kelly Preston. In 1989, he appeared in director James Ivory's comedy Slaves of New York opposite Bernadette Peters.

Crivello has also appeared in Jim Abrahams' film comedy Mafia. Sofia Milos and Jason Fuchs (1998), Texas Rangers (2001), opposite Alfred Molina (2001), opposite Hilary and Haylie Duff, Independence Day's director, and Kevin Kline, 2005. Crivello made his appearance in Ted Demme's short film The Bet in 1992. He appeared in Emma's Chance, a Hallmark Television film starring Joey Lawrence, Greer Grammer, and Missi Pyle in 2016. He appeared in Dillinger and Capone opposite Martin Sheen and F. Murray Abraham in 1995, as well as Monster Mash: The Movie for Directors Joel Cohen and Alex Sokolow.
