Life and career
Bateman, who was born in Caffeg, north of the Llynfi Valley, was a keen rugby player for his Primary and Junior school squad, Plasnewydd (coached by David Rogers), and the Maesteg Town team in the 1970s. He excelled at both rugby and soccer, being a fast sprinter and also having a large lung capacity, which allowed him to recover from physical exhaustion quickly. He was a great player for Maesteg Comprehensive School, where he was taught by Peter Williams, brother of Wales and British Lions legend J.J. Williams (also from the Llynfi Valley), and Wales back row international Gareth Williams. At their Llynfi Road base, he began his senior rugby for Maesteg RFC "The Old Parish" on the Llynfi Road grounds. Bateman started as a center for Neath in 1990 before being drafted into rugby league with Warrington Wolves.
In Warrington's 12-2 victory over Bradford Northern in the 1990–91 Regal Trophy Final during the 1994–95 season at Alfred McAlpine Stadium, Huddersfield, on Saturday, the bateman played right-centre. He returned to rugby union in 1996 after being able to gain another 31 Wales caps and one for the British and Irish Lions in 1997. He played for Wales 13 times and Great Britain twice in rugby league. With the Cronulla Sharks, he had also had a fruitful stint in Australian rugby league. He was a central figure in Northampton Saints' Heineken Cup triumph in 2000 during his brief tenure. Because of the ferocity with which he tackled, he became known as "The Clamp" in his rugby league days. He follows Chico Hopkins, J. Williams, and Gwyn Evans, among others from the Llynfi Valley's tradition.
Won 22: Won 22, Lost 13 Test Points: 10.
Bateman played for his hometown club, Maesteg, after his release from professional rugby. He now works in the Hematology Department of Princess of Wales Hospital, but he also plays at an amateur level for local team Heol-Cyw, putting his education to good use.
