Club career
In 2009, Tuilagi represented Leicester in the Middlesex Sevens at Twickenham.
Tuilagi played for Leicester Tigers against South Africa at Welford Road on November 6, 2009. Leicester defeated 22–17.
He started his senior season, 2010–11, with the senior Tigers. Richard Cockerill, the Tigers' Director of Rugby, said he wanted Tuilagi to be a first-team regular and to play for England before long. He started the majority of games for the Tigers this season and was called up for England Saxons service. On May 14, 2011 Leicester's Premiership semi-final against Northampton Saints was suspended after punching Chris Ashton. Tuilagi was later chastised for this offence and was suspended for a 10-week suspension, but then reduced to five weeks.
Leicester defeated Northampton Saints in the 2013 Premiership final, with Tuilagi scoring a try.
Manu did not play for the Tigers again until January 2016, opting to return from the bench in the 30–27 East Midlands derby victory over Northampton Saints after straining his hamstring in late 2014. He appeared in the rest of the 2015/16 season. However, his injury problems stalled and he was largely sidelined for the bulk of the 2016/17 season with knee pains, starting with his comeback in the first game of the 2017/18 season, only to suffer a new injury to his other knee. Tuilagi was visiting a Samoan witch doctor in November 2017 to find three spirits had married Tuilagi and were responsible for the pains, and the witch doctor massaged Tuilagi for two days to knock the spirits. Tuilagi left Leicester Tigers on July 10, 2020, after struggling to reach a reduced salary package amid the club's financial difficulties posed by the coronavirus pandemic.
Tuilagi agreed to join Sale Sharks on a one-year contract before the 2020-21 season begins on July 13th. He has since signed a new two-year deal.
International career
Tuilagi said he would like to play internationally for England, where he grew up and played all of his rugby. In January 2011, England Saxons defeated Italy 'A' in a match that England defeated 45–17. He was chosen to begin his England Saxons game against Italy 'A' in January 2011. He was named in England's preparation squad for the 2011 Rugby World Cup in June 2011.
In addition, Tuilagi has been working with the England Sevens squad. He played for an England sevens who won the London Floodlit Sevens in May 2010, under the banner 'Dig Deep England'.
He made his England debut in the World Cup warm-up match against Wales at Twickenham on August 6, 2011. After an inside pass from Jonny Wilkinson, he scored a try in the 44th minute underneath the posts in the 44th minute. He then scored in his third warm-up game, beating Ireland and scoring again. He was a regular starter in the World Cup. In the final match of the 2012 Autumn internationals against the World Cup winners New Zealand at Twickenham, one of his finest international performances came in his final match. England defeated the All Blacks by 38-21, their largest ever winning margin. In all three of England's attempts, Tuilagi appeared.
Tuilagi was selected in the Lions squad for their 2013 tour to Australia. He played against Western Force, Queensland Reds, and Melbourne Rebels, as well as in the third test against the Wallabies, when he appeared as a replacement in the 69th minute.
After not playing for the national team due to injury and discipline reasons since June 2014, Tuilagi returned to the England squad for the 2016 Six Nations Championship in March 2016. He was ruled out of England's tour of Australia due to an injury suffered in a Premiership semifinal loss against Saracens due to an injury.
In a 37–18 win over Australia to win his 28th cap, Tuilagi returned to the England squad in 2018 and came off the bench.
Tuilagi was named in the England squad for the 2019 Six Nations, despite a string of strong performances for club team Leicester Tigers, finishing in second place, runners up to Grand Slam champion Wales.
