Playing career
Beaumont earned 34 caps for England, set a new record for a lock, and was captain 21 times. He made his international debut in Dublin in 1975 as a late replacement for Roger Uttley. In 1975, Japan, Fiji, and Tonga, as well as Argentina in 1981 with England, he toured Australia in 1975, 1995, Japan, Fiji, and Tonga. He appeared for the Barbarians 15 times, including in 1978's match against the All Blacks.
Beaumont completed the 1977 British Lions tour to New Zealand after being called up as a replacement after Nigel Horton broke his thumb and played in the final three tests.
In 1978, he was appointed England captain in Paris. He was a sparking captain of the North of England, who led to victory over the All Blacks in 1979 and then of England, who claimed the Grand Slam for the first time in 1980.
Beaumont captained the 1980 British Lions tour to South Africa, playing in ten of the 18 games. He was the first English captain of the Lions since Doug Prentice in 1930.
Beaumont resigned from rugby in 1982 after receiving medical attention from doctors, owing to several concussions.
