Alex Webb Life

Alex Webb (born May 5, 1952) is a photographer known for his vibrant and complex color photographs.

He has been a member of Magnum Photos since 1979, including Hot Light/Made Worlds (1986), The Sunshine State (1996), La Calle (2006), Sophie Webb, Rebecca Norris Webb's wife and creative partner, and her brother, Ben Wiley (2011), The City Within (2004). He has appeared at museums around the world, including the Whitney Museum of Art, New York, the Metropolitan Museum, and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia.

In 2007, he was given a Guggenheim Fellowship.

He has written Geo, Time, National Geographic, and The New York Times Magazine, among other things.

Alex Webb Career

Career

Webb was born in San Francisco and was raised in New England. He became interested in photography as a high school student and attended the Apeiron Workshops in Millerton, New York, where he met Magnum photographers Bruce Davidson and Charles Harbutt. Webb continued to study history and literature at Harvard University (graduate in 1974), but he also studied photography at the Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts. He had been working as a photojournalist by 1974 and became an associate member of Magnum Photos in 1976. He chronicled small-town life in the American South during this period. He also did some work in the Caribbean and Mexico, which led him to be working in color in 1978, which he has continued to do.

Webb's work has been on view at the Walker Art Center, the Museum of Photographic Arts, the International Center of Photography, the High Museum of Art in San Diego, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He has been recognized by the High Museum of Art as well as the Banesto Foundation in Spain.

Rebecca Norris Webb, a photographer, and Webb now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, and the two couples have collaborated on a number of books together.
