Early life and career
Ritts, a born in Los Angeles, to a Jewish family, began his career as a member of the family furniture industry. Herb Ritts Sr., his father, was a businessman, but Shirley Ritts, his mother, was an interior designer. He moved to Bard College in New York, where he concentrated on economics and art history, graduating in 1975.
Later, when living in Los Angeles, Richard Gere, then an aspiring actor, decided to shoot some photographs in front of an old Buick that had become interested in photography. Ritts received some attention for his photo and he became more serious about photography. Brooke Shields was photographed on the front of Elle's October 12, 1981 issue, and he photographed Olivia Newton-John for her Physical album in 1981. Madonna's cover photo for her 1986 release True Blue was recreated five years later. He shot Tina Turner for the album Breaking Every Rule in the same year.
