Joe McNally (born July 27, 1952) is an American photographer who has been shooting for the National Geographic Society since 1987.

He is based in New York City and lives in Ridgefield, Connecticut. World Press Photo has given him four awards.

Early life and education

McNally was born in Montclair, New Jersey. He obtained his bachelor's and graduate degrees from the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Relations at Syracuse University.

Career

McNally was Life magazine's staff photographer from 1994 to 1998, the first one in 23 years. Faces of Ground Zero — Portraits of the Heroes of September 11th, a series of 246 giant Polaroid portraits shot in the Moby C Studio near Ground Zero in a three-week period immediately after 9/11. In 2002, a large number of these life-size (9' x 4') photographs were displayed in seven cities.

McNally has been contributing to National Geographic magazine for many years. "The Future of Flying," one of the magazine's 32-page front cover story, honoring the Wright brothers' centennial flight's centennial observance. This was the magazine's first all digital shoot. This issue was a finalist for the National Magazine Award.

He has covered sports Illustrated, Time, Newsweek, Geo, Fortune, New York, Business Week, Life and Men's Journal.

He is known for flash photography.
