Alex Brightman Life

Alexander Michael Brightman is an American stage actor best known for his portrayal of Dewey Finn in School of Rock and the title role in Beetle Juice on Broadway, both of which have been nominated for Best Actor in a Musical.

Early life

Brightman grew up in Saratoga, California. His father founded Apple's Worldwide Disabilities Solutions Group, and his mother ran a kidney dialysis clinic. He attended Bellarmine College Preparatory, an all-male Jesuit high school in San Jose, California, and graduated in 2005. In addition, he appeared with Children's Musical Theater San Jose during his youth.

Personal life

Jenny Ravitz, a casting director, married brightman at a Brooklyn wedding reception on May 21, 2018.

Brightman has admitted to being born with ventricular fold phonation, allowing him to produce Beetlejuice and Fizzarolli's iconic gruff voice with no strain on his vocal cords.

Career

In 2008, Brightman appeared on Broadway as an ensemble member and understudy, but Glory Days, which ended after only one performance. Brightman never appeared in the program. Brightman appeared in Wicked as the munchkin Boq and made his Broadway debut. He remained with the show for two years. His next Broadway appearance was in 2012 as an ensemble member and an understudy for a principal role. In Matilda the Musical, Michael Wormwood appeared later in 2013.

Brightman appeared in Andrew Lloyd Webber's School of Rock, a sequel to the 2003 film of the same name. Brightman was supposed to be performed by child actors initially, but the workshops were run by adults. Brightman appeared in the first role of Dewey in the show's concert performances, and then in his first starring role in the Broadway production. Dewey Finn, a Broadway actor, appeared at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway. Brightman was nominated for the Best Actor in a Musical at the 2016 Tony Awards. On November 5, 2016, the actor appeared in his last appearance as Dewey and returned to reprise the role for a limited run in April 2017. He returned to Broadway in 2019 to play the title role in Beetlejuice (based on the same film). At the 73rd Tony Awards ceremony, he was nominated for the Best Actor in a Musical.

Brightman, Andrew Kober, F. Michael Haynie, and Drew Gasparini are among the comedy troupe The (Morons)orons. Brightman is currently writing two new musicals titled The Whipping Boy and It's Kind of a Funny Tale (based on the novel of the same name), for which the lyrics were co-written by Brightman. During Brian "Q" Quinn's musical punishment that's based on the latter's real-life experience as a firefighter and leaving that life behind for TV fame, the former star appeared on Impractical Jokers. Brightman will be seen in the Billy Crystal helmed comedy film Here Today in October 2019. In the web based cartoon series Helluva Boss, Brightman will be voicing Fizzarolli and his robotic doppelganger Robo Fizz.
