Aleksandr Samedov Career

Club career

He was a pupil of Spartak Moscow academy and was regarded as one of Moscow's most gifted youngsters. He was a regular in the first team under Nevio Scala, but Aleksandrs Starkovs left, losing his place in the first team. Spartak Moscow then purchased Vladimir Bystrov, and in 2005, Samedov sold Lokomotiv Moscow for €3.4 million. However, Samedov did not succeed in Loko and joined FC Moscow in 2008. Having made great strides under Miodrag Boovi's direction, he decided to join a bigger club and moved to Dynamo Moscow during the 2009-10 winter transfer season. Samedov migrated to Lokomotiv, where he had been playing before. Lokomotiv paid 8.2 million euros for his services, according to a source close to the club.

Samedov earned himself as the starting XI fixture at right wing during his second stay at Lokomotiv. He managed to win a monthly vote among Loko followers in the social media for the month's best player of the month in May 2013. In April 2014, he won this poll for the second time. After the conclusion of the 2013–14 season, the club held a new poll among Loko followers on social media to select the best player of the season. Samedov received the award with 32.3 percent of votes.

He returned to FC Spartak Moscow on January 16, 2017, winning the Russian Premier League title at the end of the season. On January 5, 2019, he was released from his Spartak deal by mutual agreement.

He signed with Krylia Sovetov Samara on January 13, 2019.

He signed with semi-professional outfit Znamya Noginsk on August 28, 2019.

He resigned from football on October 27, 2019. After Znamya Noginsk was promoted to the third division of the Russian Professional Football League for the 2020–21 season, he revived his career. He resigned in January 2021 and was named scout by FC Lokomotiv Moscow. In 2022, he left Lokomotiv.

International career

Samedov first visited Baku in 2003 to have talks about representing the Azerbaijan national football team. He turned down the bid because doing so would have required him to rescind his Russian passport.

Samedov has competed for the Russian U-21s at the international level. For the first time, he was called up to the Russian national football team in late September 2011. Samedov made his senior national team of Russia on Monday after coming on as a last-minute replacement for Alan Dzagoev in the 1–0 away victory over Slovakia in a Euro 2012 qualifier.

He was named in Russia's 2014 FIFA World Cup squad on June 2, 2014.

He was named in Russia's expanded 2018 FIFA World Cup squad on May 11th. He was selected in the finalized World Cup squad on June 3, 2018. He started every game of Russia in the World Cup, but he was forced to miss in the second half in 3 out of 5, including both knock-out stage games.

Following Russia's defeat of Croatia in the 2018 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals, he resigned from the national team.
