In her early career, she portrayed Mitzi in George Kaczender's In Praise of Older Women (1978), for which she received a Genie nomination. "Exposure" was her best actress award at the Yorkton Film Festival a year later. She went to Los Angeles, California, and then to New York City.

Madeline in La Femme Nikita lasted for four seasons from 1997 to 2001 (with guest appearances in the short fifth season). Watson was diagnosed with lymphoma during the show's second season (1998), causing her to lose her hair due to chemotherapy. La Femme Nikita's producers regulated her illness and minimized her presence. When Watson lost her hair, she wore wigs in the show. In her role as Madeline in the show's third season, she sported the short haircut as her hair started to regrow.

In the first season of 24, Watson's first name was based on the character Alberta Green. Watson appeared in 24 episodes of the show's fourth season in 2005, playing CTU Director Erin Driscoll.

Watson appeared in the Canadian television series The Border as the Minister of Public Safety from 2007 to 2008.

Watson appeared in Heartland, a CBC television series, in 2010, and she received a 2011 Gemini Award for her portrayal of Sarah Craven.

Alberta played Madeline Pierce in Nikita, the CW's 2010-2013 revival of the film and TV series in a nod to her La Femme Nikita role.
