The trial: Brianna Ghey - The Dark Web

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 18, 2024
In this episode Caroline and Liz talk to Professor Alan Woodward, an expert on computer science and cyber security, at the University of Surrey. He explains how Girl X was able to access torture and murder sites online and why the dark web is so difficult to police.

How Brianna Ghey's warped killer watched torture and death on the dark web: Experts say Girl X became 'de-sensitised' and 'goaded' into murder after accessing live streams of being physically abused in 'red rooms'

www.dailymail.co.uk, December 20, 2023
Professor Alan Woodward, a computer science and cyber security specialist at Surrey University, said the so-called red rooms - underground internet portals where people are physically assaulted to draw blood and even dead - are impossible to locate and, consequently, impossible for law enforcement agencies to close down. Girl X downloaded an 'onion browser' six months before Brianna's (right) murder, which enabled her to access and watch videos of people being killed and tortured, often via live streams on the dark web.

Apple has threatened to delete FaceTime and iMessage from the United Kingdom: The tech giant slammed plans that claim to remove encryption and hand over personal information to the government

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 21, 2023
Apple has taken aim at the Home Office, which is trying to update the Investigatory Powers Act 2016 in an attempt to'protect the public from criminals, child sex abusers, and terrorists.' The act gives the Home Office the ability to access encrypted information using what is described as a technology capability notice. Apple and other messenger applications such as WhatsApp will be required to clear all new security features with the UK government before releasing them to the public. Regular iOS app upgrades will also be included in this package, which the Home Office will be able to block with a TCN without alerting the public. It would also prohibit measures such as end-to-end encryption.
