Al Roker Career

Career

While enrolled at SUNY Oswego, Roker served as a weather anchor for CBS affiliate WHEN-TV (now WTVH) in Syracuse, New York, from 1974 to 1976. He also DJ'd at WNYO, the campus radio station, during his stay in Oswego. Following the completion of his studies, Roker took a weathercasting job at independent station WTTG, which was then owned by Metromedia, for a good portion of the next two years.

When Roker was recruited at WKYC in Cleveland in 1978, he became a NBC owned-and-operated station. Roker was recruited to WNBC-TV in his hometown after five years in Cleveland. Roker returned to New York City in late 1983 as a weekend weathercaster and anchor, and within eight months, he became the station's regular weeknight weathercaster. Roker fired Dr. Frank Field, a 27-year WNBC-TV veteran who left the network due to a labor dispute, as a result of a resignation. Roker was the regular substitute for forecaster Joe Witte on the NBC News network, from 1983 to 1995, and Matt Lauer was the regular substitute for him. He appeared on CNBC in 1995 as the host of The Al Roker Show, a weekend talk show.

On an episode of the talk show Late Night with David Letterman, Roker was urged to participate in an elevator race, which taped across the hall from the WNBC news studio in the GE Building. Roker became the forecaster for Weekend Today because of this. On the weekday edition of Today, Willard Scott was either sick or absent.

Scott announced his semi-retirement from Today in early 1996. Roker was granted the regular weekday weather slot on January 26, 1996. Roker's studio remote forecasts, interviewing visitors outside and giving them some camera time, became a staple. Over time, Roker conducted more interviews and segments on the show. He continues to wish centenarians who came before Scott.

Roker remained from inside Hurricane Wilma in 2005. In a famous viral video, he is swept off his feet by the strong winds and clinging to the cameraman.

Roker hosted the third hour of Today's Take, in addition to his role as a show weather man and host, beginning on November 12, 2012. Today's Takeover was postponed in February 2017 by Megyn Kelly Today and aired its final episode on September 22, 2017. Since Megyn Kelly Today was cancelled in 2018, Roker returned to co-host 3rd Hour Today.

Roker was given a handshake by Joe Biden during Barack Obama's 2013 inauguration. Roker received a fist bump from the newly inaugurated president just days before Biden entered the White House as a NBC News reporter at Biden's own 2021 inauguration.

Roker began on a "Roker-thon" in November 2014, in which he did a non-stop weather forecast on NBC from 10 p.m. to around 8:00 a.m. on November 14, 2014. The record-breaking fundraiser was a fundraiser for the military and USO. During the week from November 6 to November 13, 2015, he hosted a "Roker-thon 2," this time reporting weather from all 50 states and Washington, D.C. in support of Feeding America. He started his journey on "Roker-thon 3," visiting colleges and establishing a Guinness World Record at each one, including the longest conga line on ice and the world's largest human letter.
