Dean Richards (born March 31, 1954) is an American film critic and entertainment reporter for WGN-TV and a longtime radio host for WGN (AM) in Chicago.
Early life and education
Now living on Chicago's northwest side, Richards is a native of Chicago's South Shore and West Beverly neighborhoods, Richards graduated from Columbia College Chicago.
Professional career
Richards began working in radio in 1975, working at radio stations such as WLTD (now WCGO), WAUR (now WFYR), WARM (now WMVP), and WCLR; now WMVR (now WMVR), WAUR, Aurora; WFYR (now WCGO), WIND (AM) and WCLR. He also did voiceover duties for WPWR-TV Channel 60 in 1984. He doubled as operations manager and morning host at the Satellite Music Network, headquartered in Chicago's southwest suburbs, from 1985 to 1990.
Richards first appeared on WNUA in Chicago in 1990 as a weekend and substitute radio host. Richards remained at WNUA in May 1991 but took up WGN-TV as a staff announcer.
After its previous morning host, Yvonne Daniels, died, Richards was promoted to become WNUA's morning host in July 1991. Richards' employment at WNUA was not renewed in the summer of 1994. Richards, who left WNUA, became a fill-in radio host at WGN (AM) in Chicago almost immediately after. The station gave him a Sunday afternoon program of his own in December 1994.
Richards was promoted to WGN's production chief in the spring of 1995, mainly responsible for radio commercials. Richards had a Saturday afternoon shift at WGN as well by October 1995.
Richards successfully persuaded Chicago authorities to rename a portion of Addison Street in Chicago near the WGN-TV studios in 1998. Before Bob Bell, who appeared on WGN-TV from 1960 to 1984, he played Bozo the Clown.
Richards debuted on WGN as a Sunday morning radio host in January 1999. Richards began giving weekly theater reviews on noon newscasts WGN-TV in Chicago in January 2000. Richards was also a member of the regular rotation of hosts of Illinois Lottery drawings, which take place at the WGN-TV studios.
Richards changed to doing his weekly theater reviews on WGN-TV's morning newscasts in 2001. Richards started covering show business for WGN-TV in 2004, including hundreds of celebrity interviews. Richards' production hours were cut at WGN-AM radio in January 2010.
