Career
Kumar first participated in International boxing in 1999, winning a gold medal in the 6th YMCA Junior International Boxing Championship. He received his second gold medal in the International Invitational Boxing Championship in Russia in 2001. He captured a gold medal in the flyweight category in 2003 by defeating Vilitio M Payla (Php) 20-16. In comparison to twelve gold, one silver, and four bronze medals, he received a Best Boxer award three times.
Kumar qualified for the Athens Games by winning second place at the 1st AIBA Asian 2004 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Guangzhou, China. He lost in the first round to Tulashboy Doniyorov of Uzbekistan. He lost in the first round of the 2004 Olympics to Jerome Thomas.
Kumar received gold medal at the 4th Commonwealth Boxing Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2005. In the 54 kg final, he defeated Bongani Mahalangu of South Africa by a narrow margin of 18-17.
He took the gold medal in the Bantamweight 54 kg category by edging out Nigerian Nestor Bolum and defeating Mauritian Bruno Julie in the final of the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
In the first round of the final, he suffered six unanswered blows. The second round was very even, with Kumar winning 5-4. He did marginally better in round 3, winning it 6-4, and despite losing the final round 3-4, he avoided the single punch that might have cost him the tie.
Kumar qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games, defeating Worapoj Petchkoom, a silver medalist from the 2004 Summer Olympics, among others, at the Asian boxing qualifying tournament in Bangkok. He advanced to the second round of the Bantamweight 54 kg category, defeating Frenchman Ali Hallab on points 12-5. He defeated World Champion Sergey Vodopyanov after coming from 2-6 down in the second round of the competition. At the end of the fourth round, the score was tied 9-9, but the judges ruled in Kumar's favor because he had landed a greater number of punches. In the quarter finals, he lost 3-10 to Veaceslav Gojan of Moldova. Gurbaksh Singh Sandhu, the Indian boxing coach, had him trained him.
Kumar defeated Marcel Schinder of Germany in the quarterfinals of the AIBA World Cup 2008 in Moscow by a margin of 15-6. The final score in the semifinals was a tie, 4-4, but this time, the judge awarded the match to his opponent. Kumar received a bronze medal.
