Daniel Geale Career

Amateur career

Geale represented his home country at the 2000 Summer Olympics, rather than winning the 2002 Commonwealth Games at welterweight. Leonard Bundu of Italy failed in the first round to him. He was a scholarship holder at the Australian Institute of Sport.

Professional career

Danny Bellert was knocked out in the third round by Geale, a 2004 pro. He went on to win 17 battles with 12 KO's, a record of 17 fights for 17 victories. On December 14, 2007, Geale fought for the IBO Middleweight Championship of the world against Daniel Dawson, the undefeated Australian who was 29-1-0 with 20 KO's coming in. With the judges' score deciding the match 120-110, 120-110, and 119-109, Geale defeated Dawson over 12 rounds to win the IBO Middleweight championship.

Geale defended his IBO Middleweight Championship with another 12 round unanimous vote over Geard Ajetovic in June 2008. In December 2008, Geale defeated Daniel MacKinnon in a non-title match. Geale was disappointed in the 8th, while McKinnon was forced to withdraw on the 4th, 6th, and twice in the 8th, but Geale was ruled unanimously by the judges. Geale beat Ian MacKillop in March 2009 in the first round, but he lost his next bout in May of the same year in a controversial split decision that has caused former WBA super middleweight champion Anthony Mundine to forfeit his IBO middleweight title. Mundine later said that he barely studied Geale at his training camp for the war. Geale, on the other hand, would recover from the humiliating loss with three victories, including an IBF Eliminator setting himself up for a world championship shot.

Geale won by split decision in May 2011 over Sebastian Sylvester in Germany (cores of 118-110, 118-112, 110-118) to become the current IBF middleweight world champion. He made his first triumphant title defense against rival Eromosele Albert in August 2011, winning by unanimously. Geale won his second straight IBF title defense by defeating Ghana's Osumanu Adama by a unanimous decision on 7 March 2012.

Geale defeated longtime WBA champion Felix Sturm in Oberhausen, Germany, by a split decision (scores of 116-112, 112-116), thereby renaming the WBA event with his newly held IBF title.

Geale's reign as unified champion was short lived two months after winning the WBA title but being barred from winning the tournament due to mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin's defeat. Geale was suspended for refusing to face compulsory opponents when he was champion. In this case, Golovkin was awarded four-and-a-half months rather than the regular nine to defend against the mandatory. Their argument was that their constitutional challengers had been ignored for too long.

Geale defeated Anthony Mundine in a unanimous points decision (scores of 116-112, 117-111, 117-111) at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on January 30, 2013 to keep his IBF middleweight world title. Mundine and his entourage stormed out of the ring and left the arena immediately after ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr. announced the results.

In Atlantic City, Geale defeated British fighter Darren Barker for Geale's IBF Middleweight world title. Geale lost in a split-decision after knocking down Barker in the sixth round.

Geale lost by TKO in the third round to the Kazakh Gennady Golovkin in what was touted as the best night of his career and taking place in the legendary Madison Square Garden. Despite being the clear underdog in the final exchange, Golovkin was clearly outclassed by Golovkin, according to Golovkin "like a champion" when Geale counterpunched Geale after Geale had connected with a right to the Kazakh's head.
