After success in public examinations, she was educated at Notre Dame des Cîteaux Secondary School and obtained a certificate in Humanities in 1973. She continued with graduate studies in mathematics and chemistry, after which she became a schoolteacher in Butare in 1976. Traditionalists chastised her for promoting mathematics and science research amongst female students.
