Abul Kashem Life

Principal Abul Kashem, 28, June 1920 – 11 March 1991), is regarded as a pioneer and the architect of Bangladesh's historic Language Movement.

He was also a scholar, author, and an eminent educator.

He founded Tamaddun Majlish, a Bengali cultural group devoted to Islam.

Early life

Kashem was born on June 28th, 1920, in the district of Chittagong's Chandanaish Upazila. Kashem graduated from Boroma Trahi Menka High School with first class and government district scholarships in 1939. He graduated with first class from Chittagong government College in 1941. He obtained a Bachelor of Science (honors) in Physics in 1944 and a Master of Science degree in Physics in 1945. He completed his master's thesis under the direction of Satyendra Nath Bose, a well-known mathematician and physicist.

Career

In 1946, Kashem began his career as a lecturer in the Physics Department at Dhaka University. He was the first person to give lectures in the Bengali at Dhaka University as a lecturer. He was a lecturer at the University of Michigan until 1953.

Kashem was heavily involved in politics. In 1952, he was one of the Khilafat-e-Rabbani Party's co-founders. He was elected as a member of the Provincial Assembly in Chittagong in 1954 as a United Front candidate from the Patia-Boalkhali constituency. As a member of the Legislative Assembly, he proposed a bill naming Bengali as the medium of instruction at all levels. He suggested Bengali as the state language on September 30, 1956, and it was accepted unanimously by the president, ensuring that Bengali was recognised as one of Pakistan's State language. In 1948, he founded the weekly Sainik, which served as the historical Language Movement's mouthpiece.

He felt the need to introduce Bengali as a medium of higher education in colleges and universities. He founded the Bangla College in Mirpur, Dhaka, in 1962, and served as Principal until 1981. He fulfilled his aspirations. He was the forerunner of textbooks in Bengali for higher education and was instrumental in the development of the Bengali version of the question papers for higher education.

Kashem has received a number of national and international awards, including the 1993 Independence Day Award, Ekushey Padak in 1987, and the 1996 Nobel Prize in Pakistan, among other things. In 1989, he was invited to a national reception in Dhaka, which was attended by eminent scholars and litterateurs of Bangladesh and India. Dhaka City Corporation named former Darussalam Road of Mirpur-1 as Bhasha Sainik Principal Abul Kashem Road in 2007 for his contributions to the renowned Language Movement.

On Monday, Kashem died at the Suhraward Hospital in Dhaka.
