Ava DuVernay created the series and was a co-writer. She also directed every episode of the show which was shot on location on Madison Avenue in the East Harlem area of Manhattan. The show earned 11 2019 Emmy Award nominations and Jharrel Jerome won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.
