Zheng Shuang (Chinese:郑爽, born 22 August 1991) is a Chinese actress.

She rose to fame with her role as Chu Yuxun in Meteor Shower (2009–2010), becoming the youngest actress to be nominated for Best Actress at the China TV Golden Eagle Award.

In 2016, she starred in the hit romance comedy drama Love O2O. Zheng was also chosen by Southern Metropolis Daily as one of the "Four Dan actresses of the post-90s Generation" (Chinese: 90后四小花旦), along with Zhou Dongyu, Guan Xiaotong and Yang Zi.

Zheng ranked 39th on Forbes China Celebrity 100 list in 2017, and 67th in 2019.

Personal life

In May 2018, Zheng Shuang met producer Zhang Heng when filming a reality show. The pair admitted to be dating in August 2018 and started a company together. The pair exchanged wedding vows in United States on 19 January 2019. However, they announced their breakup in December 2019. On 18 January 2021, Zhang revealed that he had been stranded in the US for over a year to take care of two children. The two children were born to US-based surrogate mothers on 19 December 2019 and 4 January 2020. Both Zhang and Zheng have since confirmed that they were the parents of the children. Zhang alleged that Zheng had abandoned the two children after breaking up and not wanting to sign legal papers which would allow the children to travel to China. Zheng had denied the allegations, and instead alleged Zhang was cheating on her in September 2019 and returned to China.

The fertility clinic which Zheng engaged is reportedly owed US$68,000 for the successful surrogacy. The clinic also reportedly confirmed Zheng's request to terminate the pregnancies at the seventh month, which was denied. The clinic further alleged that she wanted to pay them monthly to raise the children in the United States, instead of wanting to bring the children back to China.

She and her family also claimed that she did not abandon the children and had in fact been making arrangements since 2019 to fight for custody. On 23 January 2021, Zheng's father revealed in a video recording that the conversation which circulated online was made when Zheng and Zhang just broke up; the family just wanted to find all means to cut Zhang off from Zheng's life, instead of not wanting the children. Zheng's father also mentioned that the couple decided on having children via surrogacy due to poor health conditions resulting from Zheng's work, and he apologized for 'not advising Zheng's decision-making process correctly.'

In May 2021, the American court awarded full custody of the two children to Zhang on the basis that the children recognized Zhang as the only parent. At the same time, the court ordered Zheng to undergo treatment to stabilize her mental well-being for 6 months, and mandated Zheng to interact with the children 3 times a week to allow them establish a familial connection.

Career

Zheng Shuang made her debut in Meteor Shower, Hunan TV's reimagining of the hit Taiwanese drama Meteor Garden. The drama in China was a big hit, and Zheng brought him instant fame. For the OST, she also released "Love Waltz" a single. At the 25th China TV Golden Eagle Award, Zheng was nominated for the Best Actress award, becoming the youngest actor to be nominated. After appearing in the second season of the drama that aired in 2010, Zheng reprised her role.

In 2011, Zheng appeared in Gordon Chan's fantasy film Mural, which won her the Best New Actress award at the Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild Awards. War of Desire, an action comedy film starring No Limits, and a historical romance romance drama the same year.

Zheng appeared in two parts in Princess Taiping's historical drama, playing Princess Taiping and Princess Andingsi. She appeared in The Queen of SOP 2, the sequel to the 2011 hit drama, in 2013.

Zheng appeared in the hit fantasy action drama Swords of Legends, where she portrayed a fox spirit in 2014. The success of the drama earned Zheng renewed praise, and she received the Audience's Favorite Actress award at the 13th Huading Awards.

Zheng appeared in Chronicle of Life, based on Fei Wo Si Cun's book Lonely Courtyard in Late Spring. She then portrayed Ding Yuehua in The Three Heroes and Five Gallants, based on the 19th-century classic novel of the same name. Zheng co-starred with Yang Yang in the romance comedy drama Love O2O, based on Gu Man's novel of the same name. Both nationally and internationally, the drama brought Zheng's fame to a burgeoning audience.

In 2017, Zheng appeared in Rush to the Dead Summer, a youth melodrama based on Guo Jingming's book of the same name. The drama was praised for its realistic representation of youth and campus life, as well as its stunning cinematography. Wu Kong is her first film in six years, and she also appeared in the fantasy-adventure film.

In 2018, Zheng appeared alongside Luo Jin in the romance drama My Story for You. Hi, I'm Saori, a science fiction romance drama, was written the same year as she appeared in Hi, I'm Saori, a science fiction romance drama. Zheng was listed on Forbes China's 30 Under 30 Asia 2017 list, which included 30 influential people under the age of 30 that have had a major influence in their fields.

In 2019, Zheng appeared in Zhao Baogang's female-centric youth drama Youth Fight. River Flows To You with Ma Tianyu in the same year as she appeared in romance melodrama Cry Me A Sad River, based on Guo Jingming's book Cry Me A Sad River. Zheng was supposed to appear in Secret Keepers, where she appeared both as an undercover agent and a Japanese spy. Secret Keepers was supposed to be released on September 5, 2020, but it was immediately suspended and postponed indefinitely until September 2nd, 2020. The postponement was due to a general blacklist by the state regulators targeting a co-actor, Zhao Lixin, which meant the production team had to cut Zhao out of the drama.

In January 2021, it was revealed that Zheng had two children born of surrogacy in the United States and expressed indignation at 7 months pregnant, then rejected them after they were told that it was unlawful, but later sour. Surrogate mothers are not allowed in China, but some Chinese civilians will want to have children via surrogate mothers overseas. In China, reports of people resorting to surrogacy will often result in significant backlash.

Many retailers began to outsource her following the news' unveiling. Prada's spokesperson was later dropped due to "high media coverage" of her "personal life." Some, including London jewellery brand Lola Rose, Chinese cosmetics company Chioture, and hair care company Aussie, had distanced themselves from her, while others had taken down social media messages that had promoted her. With fans abandoning her, several of her fanclubs had also deleted material of her.

The state regulators became aware of the affair, releasing statements on various state media outlets criticizing Zheng's use of surrogacy and branding her as a "problematic artiste." Zheng was blacklisted since January 2021, with all existing entertainment operations relating to her being forced to be cancelled. When asked anonymously, several designers replied that no programmes would like to involve Zheng in the future. The awarding committee also disapproved awards at the 13th and 19th Huading Awards.

"Zheng Shuang" was a sensitive word used by Meituan Waimai, a Chinese shopping website. If consumers choose "Zheng Shuang" as the recipient or picker, they will not be able to order food.

Zhang Heng confirmed his chat history with Zheng Shuang and her mother in April 20, a Chinese Ghost Story's unreleased TV show that Zheng received a 160 million RMB (US$24.6 million) salary. Zheng was charged with a lower taxable amount of 48 million RMB to tax authorities, but the remainder was charged as fees by a woman-owned business. In 2018, China introduced regulations to limit the highest possible compensation for an actor based on a percentage of a film's production costs, which was between 40%-70%. Zheng was the subject of an investigation into possible tax evasion. The production team decided to replace Zheng's face throughout the film with Peng Xiaoran's.

It was reported that Zheng drew 156 million RMB for A Chinese Ghost Story on August 27, 2021, and that she had underdeclared her earnings from the venture through a 'yin-yang contract' arrangement. She was discovered not paying 191 million RMB between 2020 and 2021, dodged taxes of 45.27 million RMB, and underpaid her taxes by 26.52 million RMB. Zheng was charged by China's State Tax Administration with tax evasion and was fined 299 million RMB (US$46.1 million) as a penalty for suspected tax evasion. Zheng had paid the evaded taxes and late fees, but the fine was outstanding. Zhang was the agent accused of facilitating the deal and he is currently being prosecuted for his part in it. The National Radio and Television Administration also ordered that all Zheng programs, including A Chinese Ghost Story, be taken off air.
