Zhang Yiming (张一鸣; born 1 April 1983) is a Chinese internet entrepreneur.

He founded ByteDance in 2012 and developed the news aggregator Toutiao and the video sharing platform TikTok (Douyin).

As of 2019, with more than 1 billion monthly users, ByteDance is valued at US$75 billion, making it the most valuable startup in the world.

Zhang's personal wealth is estimated at $13 billion, making him the ninth richest person in China.

Early life and career

Zhang was born in Longyang Fujian, China, on April 1, 1983. He started at Nankai University in Tianjin, where he concentrated on microelectronics before moving to software engineering and graduating in 2005. At University, he met his wife.

Zhang was promoted to technical director a year later in February 2006, becoming the fifth employee and first engineer at Kuxun.

Zhang left Kuxun to work for Microsoft in 2008, but the company's corporate laws were stifled, according to him. He left Microsoft to join startup Fanfou, which later died. Kuxun's real estate search market was purchased by Expedia in 2009, and Zhang founded 99fang.com, his first company.
