Z Gorres Career

Boxing career

Gorres became a boxing instructor at the age of 9. On March 31, 2001, he began fighting as a pro. He defeated Edgar Rodrigo for the Philippine flyweight title on June 1, 2003 after winning 13 bouts in a row. In the 9th round, he lost by TKO, his first defeat.

On March 19, 2005, one of Gorres' notable victories was his 1st round stoppage of Glenn Donaire, his brother of pound for pound champion Nonito Donaire. This was his first bout in the United States.

He won the OPBF super flyweight title against Waena a year ago.

Gorres had a chance to face WBO super flyweight champion Fernando Montiel in a fight held in Gorres' hometown on February 24, 2007. Gorres was docked a point twice (one in the 10th and another in the 12th round) for holding. Montiel gained the fight and defended the title in a split decision.

Vic Darchinyan, the former IBF flyweight champion, defeated him in an IBF title eliminator on February 2, 2008. On August 2, 2008, the winner would face then IBF super flyweight champion Dimitri Kirilov of Russia, who would later be dethroned by Darchinyan. The match, on the other hand, was marred by poor refereeing and bottle-throwing by spectators who disliked it. The match came as a split draw. Nevertheless, Darchinyan retained the right to compete for the championship because he was ranked higher than Gorres in the IBF.

Gorres won his first match in the varsity division on March 14, 2009. In 7 rounds, he defeated former IBF minimumweight champion Roberto Leyva.

Gorres collapsed in the ring on November 13, 2009, after winning a 10-round match against Luis Melendez in which he was eliminated with 30 seconds remaining in the final round, he was beaten on a stretcher. He underwent surgery to reduce swelling on the left side of his brain. Doctors had intended to keep him in a medically induced coma for a few days, but Gorres responded much better than expected and came out of it. He died as a result of the injury that ended his boxing career.
