Gennady Golovkin Career

Amateur career

In 1993, Golovkin, age 11, became the first national tournament in the cadet division at Karaganda. It took several years before he was allowed to compete against seniors, and seven years before he was accepted into the Kazakhstani national boxing team and began competing internationally. In the meantime, he graduated from the Karaganda State University Athletics and Sports Department, earning a degree as well as a PE teacher certificate. In November 2002, he became a scholarship holder with the Olympic Solidarity Initiative.

He won the gold medal at the 2003 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Bangkok, defeating former two-time champion Matvey Korobov (RUS) 19–10, Andy Lee (29–29), Lucian Bute (stoppage), Yordanis Despaigne (29–26), and Oleg Mashkin in the semifinals. "Golovkin" said after his victory at the 2003 Championships, a boxing commentator who was covering the competition for NTV Plus Sports.

Remember that name!

We'll certainly hear it again."

By winning the gold medal at the 2004 Asian Amateur Boxing Championships in Puerto Princesa, Philippines, he qualified for the Athens Games. He defeated home fighter Christopher Camat in the final. He defeated Ahmed Ali Khan Pakistan 31–10, Andre Dirrell 31–20, and Andre Dirrell 23–18, losing to the Russian Gaydarbekov 18–28 for the silver medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics.

He humiliated Mohamed Hikal at the World Championships in 2005. He had an impressive career in 345–5, with all his losses being close (like 8–8 against Damian Austin or 14–15 against Andre Dirrell), no stoppages, and the majority of all losses were within a year.

Professional career

Golovkin signed with Universum Box-Promotion (UBP) in 2005 after completing his amateur career in 2005 and making his professional debut in May 2006. Golovkin's record stood at 14-0 (11 KO), and although he had few victories over boxers deemed legitimate candidates, he was still considered one of the world's best prospects. In 2009, Golovkin was given four more straightforward bouts. After being kicked out of German television station ZDF, Universum began to run into financial difficulties in 2010. Golovkin, who was essentially unable to combat in Germany, was affected by this, and labour disputes between the two parties became more complicated.

In an interview, Golovkin ended his Universum service in January 2010 and said the following: "I've always been placed behind Felix Sturm and Sebastian Zbik by Universum." We have had requests to combat Felix Sturm or Sebastian Zbik on various occasions, but on absurd grounds. My university had no such plan or vision for me; they did not even try to advance my career. They'd rather try to discourage me from winning a championship as long as Sturm and Zbik are champions. Boxing against well-known and interesting opponents was also planned, but nothing happened. This was not acceptable. It was time to move forward.

The WBA announced an interim title contest between Golovkin, ranked #1 at the time, and Milton N.ez, after breaking ties with Universum. Golovkin defeated Nez in 58 seconds to become a world champion. Golovkin was immediately promoted to WBA (Regular) champion. During this season, he attempted to combat WBA (Super) champion Felix Sturm and Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam, but was unable to get them in the ring. Golovkin's boss, Oleg Hermann, said, "It's really difficult to find a good opponent." Everybody knows that Felix Sturm is afraid of Gennady. Sturm should step out of boxing and into marathon running because he is running fast and long, according to Strictly Speaking. He has a chance to be a champion in athletics.

Golovkin, who aspired to be a global brand by fighting in Madison Square Garden and Staples Center, aspired to become a worldwide celebrity. He joined K2 Promotions and began training in Big Bear, California, with Abel Sanchez, the veteran trainer behind Hall of Famer Terry Norris and many other top prospects. Sanchez was deceived by Golovkin's humble appearance at first: "I glanced at him, I thought: 'Man!' This guy is a choir boy!" Golovkin's talent and demeanor from their first meeting were immediately stunned and impressed. Since then, he has contributed Mexican-style violence to Golovkin's Eastern European-style amateur sport, resulting in a strong hybrid champion. "I have a chalkboard in the gym, and I wrote Ali's name, Manny Pacquiao's name, and his name," Sanchez said. 'You might be right there,' I told him.' He was all sheepish, but once I felt his hands, I realized how smart he was in the ring and how he got on... sheesh. Or he's going to be the most unlikely boxer in boxing, or he's going to get the chance he deserves."

In August 2012, Golovkin was scheduled to make his HBO debut against Dmitry Pirog (20-0, 15 KOs) in Dmitry Pirog (20-0, 15 KOs). Pirog had vacated his WBO middleweight title to face Golovkin. This was because Pirog was ordered to face interim champion Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam. Pirog had sustained a back injury—a ruptured disc—that would prevent him from participating on the scheduled date, but Golovkin would also face another opponent on HBO weeks weeks before the fight. Several attempts by Pirog were thwarted by persistent back issues, effectively ending his premature retirement.

Golovkin will defend his titles against European champion and The Ring's #10-rated middleweight Grzegorz Proksa (28–1, 21 KOs) on September 1st, New York. The war was televised on HBO in the United States and Sky Sports in the United Kingdom. Golovkin put on an impressive showing in his American debut by battering Proksa to a fifth-round technical knockout (TKO), Proksa's first loss by knockout. Golovkin's popularity was lauded by Proksa, who said, "The guy strikes like a hammer." I tried everything, but it didn't work. You have to give him credit for having a solid grasp of the situation, and it was an honor to see him in the ring." According to CompuBox results, Golovkin delivered 101 of 301 punches (34%) and Proksa landed 38 of his 217 thrown (18%). The WBA stripped Geale of the WBA (Super) middleweight champion Daniel Geale of the WBA from his rematch against Anthony Mundine in October, naming Golovkin the sole WBA champion at middleweight.

Golovkin will meet #9-rated light middleweight Gabriel Rosado (21–5, 13 KO) on the HBO Salido-Garcia card on November 30, 2012, according to the co-main event. It was expected that Golovkin would have a catchweight of 158 pounds, two pounds below the middleweight maximum, on January 19, 2012. Rosado later turned down the bid, saying he would fight to the full 160 pounds maximum.

With a TKO victory over Rosado, Golovkin resurrects his stoppage-streak. Rosado's corner threw in the towel to save Rosado, who was battered and bleeding heavily from his nose and left eye, and the fight was suspended. Golovkin was the judge's scorecards 60–54, 60–54, and 59–55 at the time of the suspension. Golovkin landed 208 of 492 punches (42%) and Rosado only landed 76 of his 345 thrown (22%), according to CompuBox Statistics.

Golovkin will face former WBA interim super welterweight champion Nobuhiro Ishida (24–8–2, 9 KO) in Monte Carlo on January 31, 2013, when it was first announced on January 31. Ishida had lost his last two fights but had never been suspended in his 13-year career. Golovkin was the first to knock out Ishida in what was supposed to be a "stay busy war," winning him in the third round with a devastating overhand right. The referee did not begin counting and waved an end to the match right away.

On the 29th of June 2013, Golovkin defeated British former world championship challenger Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KOs) at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut. In April, the war was confirmed in full. Macklin had previously lost back to back world championship matches against Felix Sturm and Sergio Martinez in 2011, and 2012, respectively. In 2013, Golovkin said he wanted to fight a second time. As majority fights only 2 or 3 times a year, it was rare to hear from a world champion. There were a total of 2,211 people in attendance. Macklin was dubbed Golovkin's most feared rival to date. Golovkin landed clean with his right hand and sent Macklin against the ropes, but it may have been ruled a knockdown because only the roped kept Macklin on his feet, calling out the knockdown. The first two rounds are dominated by Golovkin. Golvokin had a right uppercut and a left hook to the body in the third round. Macklin, who was in pain, was weighed out and the match was called off at 1 minute 22 seconds of the round. In a post-fight interview, Macklin named Golovkin the best opponent he has encountered. Golovkin retained his WBA and IBO world titles. According to CompuBox Statistics, Golovkin delivered 58 of 116 punches (50%) and Macklin landed 29 of 118 (25%). The show attracted 1.1 million viewers.

Sports Illustrated reported on August 18 that Golvokin would return to defend world titles against Curtis Stevens (25–3, 18 KO) at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York on November 2nd. Stevens was ranked #5 WBC and #6 IBF at the time, and #6 IBF. Originally, Stevens' promotion, Principal Events, turned down a $300,000. Stevens was certainly a push in K2 to lure him into the competition with Golovkin, who had previously been a fan of his.

Golovkin held his positions against Stevens after a seventh-round technical knockout, brutally punching the latter down with many fiery punches to the head and body. Stevens went down hard in the 2nd from two left hooks to the head, and after watching their fighter absorb significant punishment, Stevens' corner called for a halt in the 8th. Golovkin was ahead 80-71, 79–71, and 79–72 at the time of the breakdown. The sporting spectacle drew worldwide, with Sky Sports in the United Kingdom, Channel 1 in Russia, and Poland's Polsat TV showing the event attracted huge audiences around the world. The victory was Golovkin's 15th straight stoppage victory, confirming his place as one of the top finishers in the middleweight division. "He was strong, and I was a little worried about his health, but I was relaxed in there, and never felt like I was in danger," Golovkin said after the fight.

According to CompuBox Stats, Golovkin landed 293 of 794 punches (37%), which included 49% of power punches, while Stevens landed 97 of 303 (192%). Golovkin's purse was $400,000, while Stevens received $290,000. On HBO, there were 1.41 million viewers and the highest number of 1.566 million.

Golovkin's camp requested that he be awarded the WBA (Super) middleweight title in December 2013, but the WBA denied it, because Golovkin had already been granted special permission for a fight prior to his mandatory participation.

On February 1, 2014, Golovkin's next title defense took place in Monte Carlo against former title challenger Osumanu Adama (22–3, 16 KO)... HBO released a statement on January 22 that they could not televise the match in the United States. The reason cited was due to the sheer number of the site Salle des Etoiles and production difficulties. Adama was ranked #20 by the WBA as a rookie in the fight. Golovkin defeated Golovkin in the seventh round after a tie. Golovkin dropped Adama with a strong jab and right hand at the end of the 1st round. In the 6th round, Golovkin dropped Adama by two sharp left hooks to his head, and then in the 7th with a hard jab. Adama was then nailed with a left hook to the jaw, shocking Adama and causing the referee to call off the match. "I want to fight Sergio Martinez to see who has the best middleweight," Golovkin replied after the fight. At the time of the suspension, one judge had it 60–52, and the other two had 59–53 in favour of Golovkin.

A day after beating Adama, a match with Irish boxer Andy Lee (31-2, 22 KOs) was being discussed on May 26th, the upcoming Golovkin fight at the Theater in Madison Square Garden would have been broadcast on HBO. On February 28, it was announced that a deal was close to being made, but that the war was called off on March 1st after Golovkin's father died after suffering a heart attack aged 68. They have a 40-day mourning period due to faith, according to K2's chief Tom Loeffler.

The World Boxing Association officially promoted Golovkin from Regular middleweight champion to Super Champion on June 3rd, following ten fruitful title defenses. Golovkin was also granted a special right to defend his title against Daniel Geale. Golovkin had been previously scheduled to face #2 Jarrod Fletcher.

Golovkin will face The Ring's #2-rated middleweight Daniel Geale (30-2, 16 KOs) at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York on July 26, 2014, live on HBO. Golovkin defended his title in front of 8,572 at The Theater, defeating Geale by a third round stoppage. In the second round, Golovkin defeated Geale. Geale was let down again in the third by a right hand, who had never fully recovered. Referee Michael Ortega's callback came at a dramatic Geale. According to GGG's manager Abel Sanchez, Geale's loss began with a strong Golovkin Jab in the second round. "Gennady struck him with a jab in the second round, and that was a telling sign." Both fighters had accuracy at 29 percent, but the team's focus resulted in a major victory for Golovkin in his career. Golovkin received $750,000 in comparison to Geale, who received $600,000. According to HBO, the game attracted 984,000 viewers and surpassed 1.048 million viewers. This was a big drop compared to Golovkin's victory over Stevens, the first time he appeared on HBO.

Golovkin is expected to face former world champion Bruno Rubio and then Interim WBC champion Marco Antonio Rubio on August 12, 2014 (59-6-1, 51 KO). The match between Golovkin and Rubio was declared on August 20th. The fight will be broadcast on HBO at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, on October 18, 2014, according to K2 Promotions. It will be the first time Golovkin will meet on the West Coast. "I'm really excited to fight in California," Golovkin said on ESPN. I always enjoy attending fights at the StubHub Center, and I'm looking forward to a Mexican-style brawl against Marco Antonio Rubio." Rubio lost the Interim WBC title due to his inability to make weight, weighing in at 161.8 pounds, effectively ending the Interim WBC crown on the scales. Rubio was given the opportunity to shed the extra pounds in two hours but decided against it. The war in itself went on.

It was announced that 9,323 people would attend the historic number. In a competitive first round, Golovkin defeated Rubio, delivering more punches. Golovkin landed an overhand power left to Rubio's head in the second round, with Rubio on the ropes. Rubio regained his balance on the canvas and received a full ten count in Spanish from referee Jack Reiss. Rubio got up and was moving with a glove on his back of his head to the referee after the knockout. However, the knockout blast was clear, and the count, which had been posted in Spanish, was of normal speed. Golovkin retained his WBA (Super) and IBO middleweight titles, winning the WBC Interim title, making him the mandatory challenger to full titleholder Miguel Cotto. Golovkin in the post-fight demonstrated respect by saying, "Rubio, he does not step back." He is a good fighter. I love him. It was a tough blow." Rubio made $350,000 after having to forfeit $100,000 to Golovkin for not making weight and not receiving any compensation through his promoter, but not including any compensation. Golovkin's 12th defense appeared, ranking him with Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Felix Sturm for third-most in middleweight history. Nevertheless, the number of defenses is often challenged, considering that the WBA Regular belt, which was previously held by Golovkin, is regarded as a secondary rank. According to ESPN, the show attracted 1.304 million viewers and peaked at 1.323 million.

In Monte Carlo, Golovkin defended his middleweight titles against British boxer Martin Murray (28-1-1, 12 KOs). In October 2014, the war was officially announced. Murray started the game off well defensively, but Golovkin's heat up and Murray began to surfaced consistently in the fourth round. Murray was knocked down twice in the fourth round, with another punch to the head when sitting on a knee. In the middle-rounds, Golovkin found it much simpler to land his punches on Murray. Though Murray's chin contained a lot of Golovkin punches in those middle-rounds, he ultimately dropped in round 10 after suffering a lot of punishment. Murray was disqualified for round 11 and had thus longer in the ring with Golovkin than with any other of his opponents so far, but the referee called off the match as Murray came out with a bloodied count and Golovkin continued to connect with shots, but Murray was unable to respond with punches because Murray was not attacking back properly and had taken too many punches. According to CompuBox results, Golovkin landed 292 of 816 punches (36%), and Murray connected on 131 of 469 (28%). During the afternoon, the fight aired on HBO in the United States and attracted 862,000 viewers. The three judges had their respective scorecards read 100–87, 99–88, and 99–88 in favour of Golovkin at the time of suspension. The show was shown live on HBO in the United States in the afternoon and attracted 862,000 viewers, with the most notable at 938,000 viewers. Despite the fact that Golovkin's viewership was down on HBO, it was expected because it was shown during the day and not at peak time.

Golovkin was hired to defend his titles against American Willie Monroe Jr. (19-1, 6 KOs) at The Forum in Inglewood, California, on May 16, 2015. Golovkin defeated Monroe in a sixth-round TKO, extending his KO streak to 20. Monroe got off to a good pace in the first minute of the first round, with GGG securing the ring and outworking him. GGG came forward and shot an off guard Monroe with power shots along the ropes, and Monroe staggered to his knees, defeating referee Jack Reiss' ten count. Referee Reiss was keen to give Monroe another chance, but Monroe refused to pursue, saying, "I'm done." Reiss stopped the game right away. Monroe was dropped a total of three times. The scorecards for Golovkin were 50–43, 50–43, and 49–44 at the time of the stoppage. Golovkin landed 133 of 297 punches (45%), while Monroe landed 87 punches of 305 (29 percent). "Willie is a good fighter, a tough soldier," Golovkin said in the post-fight. I'm feeling great. My appearance was something special for you guys. This was a good drama show. "This was for you." "I stay here," he said of future conflicts. I am the true champion. I want unification. Let's get to it guys, let's do it! Who is No. 2?

1 right now?

Bring it on. I will tell you." Miguel Cotto, Sal lvarez, and Andre Ward's names were mentioned in connection with unification and large wars. Golovkin received a $1.5 million reward, while Monroe received $100,000 for the fight. The fight attracted an average viewership of 1.338 million viewers and a record of 1.474 million viewers.

In a unification fight at the Madison Square Garden in New York City on October 17, Golovkin will defend his three world titles against IBF world champion David Lemieux (34–2, 31 KOs) in a match between Golovkin and IBF World Championship David Lemieux (36–32 KOs). Both boxers took to Twitter to share the news. In June 2015, Lemieux claimed the then vacant IBF title by outpointing Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam.

With Lemieux's IBF championship, Golovkin unified his WBA (Super), IBO, and WBC Interim middleweight titles. When launching his power shots in between, Golovkin slowed the pace, keeping Lemieux off balance the entire night. In the fifth round, Lemieux was disqualified by a body shot and delivered a strong punch to the head after taking a knee. In the eighth, he was heavily injured, so the referee was forced to call a halt to the match. Golovkin landed 248 of 549 punches (51%) among 549 others thrown (51%), while Lemieux landed 89 of 335 (27%).

According to HBO, the brawl saw 153,000 PPV subscribers and brought a new $2 million live gate from the sold out arena. The contest was relived later this week with 797,000 viewers and a record of just over 1.2 million viewers.

On Tuesday, Golovkin will defend his IBF and WBA middleweight titles against IBF qualifier Dominic Wade (18–0, 12 KOs) at The Forum in Inglewood, California. "I'm excited to fight again at the Forum in front of my fans and colleagues in Los Angeles," Golovkin said, "I'm not expecting this bout to be exciting." Wade was extremely grateful for the opportunity to defeat Golovkin, "I am so grateful to be given the opportunity to face 'GGG' for the IBF Middleweight Championship on April 23!" To get to this point, I've been working hard my entire life. "I'm poised and excited to face the challenge." Roman Gonzalez, who successfully defended his WBC flyweight title with a unanimous points decision over McWilliams Arroyo, was co-featured on the card. Golovkin defended his middleweight titles with a late stoppage of Wade, his 22nd straight knockout, in front of a sell-out crowd of 16,353. Wade was knocked down three times before the match was called off with 23 seconds remaining in round 2. Golovkin landed 54 of 133 punches (41%), the majority of which being power punches, according to CompuBox figures. Wade was able to land 22 of his 75 throws (29%). When asked about Canelo lvarez, Golovkin said, "I feel fantastic." I'm here, and I'm here to stay. I'm not going anywhere.

Give me my belt, give me my belt!

"Let's fight," Golovkin reportedly earned a career-high $2 million for this fight relative to Wade's $500,000. On HBO, the show attracted an average of 1,325,000 viewers and topped out at 3,888,000.

Following Canelo lvarez' victory over Miguel Cotto, talks between the Golovkin and lvarez camps over the future WBC championship defense began. In the end, an agreement was reached to allow interim bouts before the war to be fought to "maximize the interest in their highly awaited showdown," according to WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman's words.

Varez vacated the WBC middleweight title on May 18, resulting in Golovkin being honoured immediately by the WBC as their middleweight champion.

Golovkin will defend his world middleweight titles against unbeaten British IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36–0, 25 KOs). The confrontation took place on September tenth of London, England, on September 10th, 2016. Brook was supposed to fight Jessie Vargas in a unification fight, but Golovkin was scheduled to face Chris Eubank Jr., but negotiations fell through and Brook decided to change two weight divisions to face Golovkin. The fight aired in the United States on HBO and on Sky Box Office pay-per-view in the United Kingdom.

The WBA suspended the contest on September 5th. Although they gave Golovkin a special license to fight, they said that their title would not be in risk. Brook had never participated in the middleweight division, which was the reason for the dismissal. "I most regret is that there are no boxers at 160 pounds who will face 'Triple G,' and Brook will have to fight him in two divisions," WBA president Gilberto Mendoza Jr. said. The Golovkin camp was apparently dissatisfied with the WBA's decision, with promoter Tom Loeffler saying that "somehow the WBA felt it was too risky for a welterweight to fight the biggest puncher in boxing." Kell Brook is undefeated and regarded as one of the top pound-for-pound boxers, from lightweight to heavyweight] to face Paulie [Malignaggi] and Roy Jones in 2013].

In the first round, Golovkin came out briskly, even going as far as to buckle Brook's legs. Brook started to fire back by combining several clean combinations on Golovkin, none of which were able to faze him. Brook's first round victory of the tournament was his best, but his right eye socket was damaged during the process. Golovkin began to break Brook down in the first three rounds. When he absorbed the bulk of a Golovkin attack, the Englishman displayed courage, tenacity, and a smocky smile. Despite the fact that the fight was even on two judges' scorecards and one judge's backing Brook was up by a point, the latter's side threw in the towel to shield their fighter's injured right eye, bringing the fight to a conclusion in round 5, with both boxers still standing. "I promised to bring 'Big Drama Show,' like a street fight,' Golovkin said after the war. I don't feel his authority. I can imagine his distance. He has a long way. He has [my power], and I know it isn't boxing. I need a street fight. He just broke him. That's it." "I'm devastated," Brook said. I was expecting him to be a bigger puncher. He broke my eye socket in the second round, I believe. He caught me with a bullet, and I was starting to get into combat, but I was seeing three or four of him so it was difficult to get through it. I was tricking him. His shots were coming from underneath, and I was mad at him. I was beginning to settle into him, but seeing three or four of them is frustrating to carry on." Despite the fact that Brook battled like a true champion, he wasn't a middleweight, according to Golovkin.

Golovkin delivered 133 of his 301 punches (44.2%), according to Compubox, while Brook landed 85 punches, having thrown 261 (32.6%). In the afternoon, the show was broadcast live on HBO and attracted an average of 843,000 viewers and topped at 90,000. This was considered by HBO to be a big success for an afternoon performance. Later in the evening, a replay was shown as part of the world super flyweight championship battle between Roman Gonzalez and Carlos Cuadras. The replay attracted 593,000 viewers. Golovkin received a guaranteed $5 million payout. Brook was promised less than £3 million, but the company still had a share of PPV revenues.

Following Brook's victory, there were immediate discussions of a WBA unification match against Daniel Jacobs (332–1, 29 KOs), as part of the WBA's efforts to minimize the number of world titles in each division from three to one. After the Jacobs show, Team Golovkin discussed taking on Billy Joe Saunders, it would be a middleweight unification fight for both the belts.

The date discussed originally was 10 December, when Golovkin's staff had to cancel for Madison Square Garden due to Golovkin's illness. Since beating Liam Smith, HBO's original date was set, but Canelo has announced that he will not be fighting again until 2017. Tom Loeffler and Al Haymon were already discussing the split in purses, and if the fight goes to purse bids, it will be a 75-25 split with Golovkin taking the majority due to him being the 'Super' champion. Jacobs wanted a better split as negotiations went on, around 60 to 40. On October 7, the WBA granted an extension for the negotiation period, meaning that the two sides had until October 10th to reach an agreement or else a purse bid would have been due. The WBA turned down a bid to revert the purse bid split to 60–40. On October 17th, Golovkin began his preparations for the fight.

Although the talks remain ongoing, Loeffler told the LA Times on October 18th that although the talks remain active, the war will not take place on December ten. If you're looking for a new date for early 2017 then the fight will be held in Madison Square Garden. Golovkin is known as a vivacious fighter, and this year marks his first year since 2012 that he has appeared in fewer than three fights. In an email to RingTV, WBA president Gilberto Mendoza said that a deal must be made by 5 p.m. on December 7th or a purse auction will be held in Panama on December 19th. The WBA declared a purse bid of $400,000 on the same day, with Golovkin receiving 75% and Jacobs 25%. Despite the fact that purse bids had been revealed, Loeffler said he would keep talks, hopeful that a settlement will be reached before the purse auction was closed.

The terms were finally agreed on and it was confirmed that the contest would be held at Madison Square Garden in New York City on March 18, 2017, exclusively on HBO PPV. Golovkin tweeted the news, while Jacobs posted a quick video on social media. Both fighters were knocked out in a row at the time of the match. According to reports, Golovkin's IBO world championship will not be involved. The belt would be at risk, according to the IBO's website later. "Middleweight Madness" was the title of HBO's official fight on Tuesday. Loeffler said there was no rematch provision in place.

Golovkin weighed in at 159.6 lb, while Jacobs weighed 159.8 lb, the official weigh-in, a day before the fight. Jacobs declined to qualify for the IBF title by missing a fight-day weight check. The IBF does not encourage participants in championship matches to perform a weight check on the morning of the fight, as well as the official weigh-in the day before the fight; at the morning weight check, they can weigh no more than 10 pounds (4.5 kilogram) over the fighting's weight limit. On fight night, Jacobs weighed 182 lb, 12 more than Golovkin.

The bout went full 12 rounds in front of a sell-out crowd of 19,939 people. It was the first time Golovkin had fought 12 rounds in his professional career. Golovkin's ring control, consistent forward pressure, and a nimble jab win brought him 115–112, 115–112, and a 114–113 unanimous decision victory, snaping his 23-fight winning streak that dates back to November 2008. Golovkin was favored by ESPN to win 115–112. The first three rounds were tense with no movement. Golovkin knocked Jacobs with a short right hand along the ropes in the fourth round for a flash knockdown. Jacobs recovered, but Golovkin was in charge of the majority of the middle rounds. Jacobs was quick in converting from orthodox to southpaw, but he stayed on the back foot. Referee Charlie Fitch had warned both boxers that they had been warned once in the fight for rabbit punching. Golovkin landed 231 of 615 punches (38%), more than Jacobs who landed 175 of 541 (32%), according to Compubox punch statistics. Some people doubted that Golovkin did enough to win, but some doubted that it was enough to triumph. Jacobs thought he had won the fight by two rounds and attributed the loss to Golovkin's upcoming big money match against Canelo. After being knocked down, Jacobs told Golovkin, "he'd have to kill me." "I'm a boxer, not a killer," Golovkin said in the post-fight interview. I love the game. Golovkin was expected to earn at least $2.5 million compared to Jacob's $1.75 million before he announced it on the company's website.

Tom Loeffler announced on March 24 that the war had generated 170,000 pay-per-view sales. On HBO later this week, a replay was shown and averaged 709,000 viewers. Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times announced that the live gate was $3.7 million, up from the Golovkin vs. Lemieux PPV, which had a $2 million IPO. He also said that merchandise and sponsorships were higher.

Golovkin, who wore his belts against Jacobs, said he wanted to unify the middleweight division and keep all of the belts open. Billy Joe Saunders, a British boxer, was the only major belt not related to him, winning the WBO championship. Golovkin said, "My aim is all the belts in the middleweight division." Of course, Billy Joe is the last one to finish. It is my dream." At the EXPO 2017, there were rumors of a confrontation taking place in Golovkin's home country Kazakhstan in June. In 2010, Golovkin was fighting in his home country for the last time. Golovkin said on March 20 that he would face Saunders in his native Kazakhstan or London's O2 Arena.

Although Saunders didn't watch Golovkin's match with Jacobs, he was determined to defeat him on social media. Saunders said to have signed the deal before leaving him at the end of it, and gave Golovkin a deadline to sign him. Golovkin will have ten days to sign for the fight, according to promoter Frank Warren on March 29. Saunders later appeared to have departed from Golovkin until Warren said the agreement was still in place. Saunders continued to insult Golovkin on social media over the next week. Warren told iFL TV on Tuesday that Golovkin sustained a hand injury, which was the reason why the fight hadn't been decided. "They're saying Golovkin is wounded right now," Golovkin said in the interview. So we're curious to see what this is all going to be like. However, we decided [to] terms] as long as I'm concerned. It was also announced that he would wait until May 6th for any updates. The fight would not take place on April 11, but Golovkin will eventually focus on a September 2017 match against Canelo lvarez.

Canelo lvarez revealed that he will next meet Golovkin on September 16, 2017, at a location to be determined, immediately after the Chavez fight on May 6. Golovkin, who said he did not attend the fight, was joined by his manager Abel Sanchez and promoter Tom Loeffler. During the announcement of their impending match, Golovkin joined him in the ring to help promote their forthcoming fight. "Golovkin, you are next, my friend," lvarez said via translator. The war is over. Since being 15 years old and fighting as a professional, I've never feared anyone. Fear had been banished since I was born." "I'm really excited" when Golovkin stepped into the ring, he said. This is a different story right now. It will be a different style in September -- a big drama show. I'm set. Canelo and his staff received their first congrats this evening. I think everybody is excited about September right now. Canelo looked good tonight, and 100 percent he is the biggest challenge of my career. Canelo is looking forward to September's good fortune. Both boxers met face to face and discussed the forthcoming war in the post-fight press conference.

Eric Gomez, president of Golden Boy Promotions, told the Los Angeles Times on Sunday that lvarez had an immediate rematch clause in place, but Golovkin, if he loses, will not be rewarded with a match. In a span of interviews with ESPN, Oscar De La Hoya confirmed in a full middleweight maximum of 160 pounds with no re-hydration restrictions, which means Golovkin and lvarez will be able to gain unlimited amounts of weight following the weigh in. The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas was revealed as the venue of the fight on Friday, the first time Golovkin will face in Nevada. The fight was not broadcast live at At&T Stadium, Madison Square Garden, and Dodger Stadium. In a statement released by Eric Gomez of Golden Boy Promotions, Varez said in a tweet that he would fight for the IBF, implying that he would weigh in on the second day. The IBF does not accept more than ten pounds over the 160 pound limit. Despite the fact that he said there was no word on whether lvarez would compete for the WBC title, lvarez denied it. Golden Boy and K2 Promotions announced that the tickets had sold out on July 7th, 2017.

Robert Diaz, a Golden Boy matchmaker, revealed on August that lvarez would indeed participate in the IBF mandatory second day weigh in and that he absolutely intends to compete for the IBF title alongside the WBA crown. He did make it clear that although Golovkin will still support the WBC and IBO titles, lvarez will not pay their sanctioning fees. IBF president Daryl Peoples declared on August 22 that they would no longer be allowed to vote in unification battles, although neither fighters are allowed to participate, but they would still encourage them to do so. It was announced that Lopez would earn minimum $5 million and Golovkin would make $3 million before any of the funds were added to their purses.

Golovkin and lvarez fought to a split draw on fight night, in front of a sold out audience of 22,358, Golovkin and 114–114). Golovkin's Dan Rafael and HBO's Harold Lederman scored the contest 116-112 in favor of Golovkin. Judge Adalaide Byrd's scorecard, which was 118–110 in favour of lvarez, was widely mocked. Many observers agreed that Golovkin had won a close match, and although a draw was justified, a vote in favour of lvarez was inexcusable. However, Nevada Athletic Commission Director Bob Bennett said he had utter confidence in Byrd going forward. Despite the controversies, several mainstream media outlets referred to the campaign as a "classic." Both boxers settled into their rhythm, with lvarez using his footwork and Golovkin establishing his jab. During the middle rounds, particularly between 4 and 8, the Varadkar started each round quickly but then collapsed after a minute, with Golovkin leading and doing enough to win the round. The championship rounds were arguably the best rounds in the tournament, and lvarez began to counter more, and both fighters had toe-to-toe exchanging swings, the majority of which skipped. Golovkin made his ninth straight defense after being drawn in the draw. According to CompuBox results, Golovkin was the busier of the two, landing 218 of 703 thrown (31%), while lvarez was more precise, landing 169 of his 505 units (34%). In ten of the 12 rounds, Golovkin defeated lvarez. The replay, which took place a week later on HBO, at 726,000 viewers, with 840,000 viewers in the house.

"It was a big drama show," Golovkin said after the fight to Max Kellerman. [The scoring] is not my fault. Every round, I put pressure on him. See, I still have all the belts. I am still the champion. "I felt as if he had won the first round, I went out to see what he had in the first rounds." I was starting from there. I think I won eight rounds. I felt I had won the fight. I think I was the best in the competition. At least seven or eight rounds were beaten by me. I was able to counterpunch and made Gennady wobble at least three times. It's up to the people if we fight again. "I get really upset about my draw." Judge Byrd's scorecard was completed before the first bell rang, according to Golovkin's handler Abel Sanchez. lvarez ruled out another combat in 2017 in the hopes that he would return to Cinco de Mayo weekend in May 2018. "Look, right now I want a rest," lvarez said through a translator at the post-fight press conference. We'll do whatever the fans want, whatever the people want and ask for. You should know that this is my style. However, who knows if it's in May or September? Well, one thing is for certain – this is my age, the era of Canelo. Golovkin's promoter, Tom Loeffler, said they would like a quick match, but Golovkin, who likes fighting at least three times per calendar year, confirmed his intention to fight in December. Saunders, the WBO middleweight champion, said he was excited for Golovkin and that he was planning to fight in December.

The fight surpassed Mayweather-lvarez for the third highest gate in boxing history. According to ESPN, the competition raised $27,059,850 from 17,318 tickets sold. According to the NSAC, 934 free tickets were given out. Mayweather vs. lvarez, 16,146 tickets were sold to produce a live gate that cost $20,003,150. The replay, which took place a week later on HBO, attracted 726,000 viewers, with 840,000 viewers in a week. According to the LA Times, the conflict generated 1.3 million domestic PPV purchases. Even though HBO did not make a formal announcement, it is estimated that the number will exceed $100 million.

As a result of the tense conclusion, negotiations between lvarez and Golovkin began shortly. Varez said he would return in May 2018, while Golovkin was open to combat in December 2017. According to ESPN, lvarez, who only had the rematch clause in his deal, must activate it within three weeks of being defeated. Everyone on their team was involved in the match, according to ESPN, and in the coming days, Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez told ESPN that they will hold talks with Tom Loeffler. Ringtv announced that talks would begin on September 22nd. Gomez said on September 24 that the rematch will likely take place in the first week of May 2018, or if a deal could be reached, we may see the match begin as early as March. Despite continuing discussions for the match, the WBC declared a match on October 2nd, Azerbaijan's 55th annual convention. "We don't know if they did or didn't order the match, we're going to try to make it happen," Golden Boy president Eric Gomez told ESPN. We'll do whatever it takes to make it happen." Eric Gomez said on Sunday that the talks were going well and that lvarez would make a decision in the coming weeks regarding the rematch. It was believed that Golden Boy would wait until after David Lemieux and Billy Joe Saunders competed for the latter's WBO title on December 16, 2017 before making the decision. Eddie Hearn, the promoter of Daniel Jacobs, told Tom Loeffler that if the rematch between Golovkin and Jacobs did not take place, he warned him of a potential match between Golovkin and Jacobs. Eric Gomez said on December 20th that the talks were close to being finalized after lvarez told Golden Boy that the contracts were going to be written up. HBO confirmed the match on January 29, 2018 on the Cinco de Mayo weekend, on May 5th. The T-Mobile Arena in Winnipeg was once more selected as the fight's venue on Tuesday. Unlike the first round, lvarez will fight for their first title, according to WBC.

Before the fight, lvarez tested positive for the banned drug clenbuterol on March 5th. Abel Sanchez, Golovkin's manager, said that lvarez had his hands tied in an unlawful manner during his first fight. The Nevada State Athletic Commission temporarily suspended Varez due to his two positive tests for the banned drug clenbuterol on March 23. On April 10, lvarez was required to attend a commission hearing, either in person or by phone. At the hearing, the commission would determine whether the war will go forward as planned. Golovkin intended to fight on May 5th, regardless of whether he was a victim or someone else, according to Tom Loeffler. Demetrius Andrade (25-0, 16 KOs), the former two-time light middleweight champion who began campaigning at middleweight in 2017, entered the game and said he would face Golovkin on May 26. If the match was to be postponed on 10 April, IBF mandatory challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko's boss Keith Connolly told Boxing Scene that Derevyanchenko will be able to swap lvarez and face Golovkin in his place. MGM Resorts International, the T-Mobile Arena's owner, began to offer complete refunds to anyone who had already purchased tickets for the tournament on March 28. "If a fan requested a refund, they could have one at the original point of purchase and in full." The Las Vegas Review-Journal broke the news. As Bob Bennett lodged a lawsuit against lvarez, the hearing was postponed for 18 April. Varez formally dropped out of the competition on Thursday, on April 3rd. During a press conference, Golden Boy said it was speculated that lvarez would not be cleared at the hearing, but that they would not have enough time to promote the fight. Lvarez received a six-month suspension, dating back to his first drug test fail on February 17, triggering the prohibition to end on August 17. De La Hoya's promoter later revealed that lvarez would return to the ring on the Mexican Independence Day weekend.

Loeffler announced on 2 April that Golovkin would fight whether it be lvarez or another boxer, and the fight will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Paradise. "I am looking forward to returning to Las Vegas for my 20th title defense and headlining my first Cinco De Mayo match on May 5th," Golovkin said. Jaime Munguia, a 21-year-old untested prospect who previously competed at welterweight and light middleweight, will step in and face Golovkin, according to ESPN on 5 April. Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times reported that sources close to NSAC had been verified later that day, but that if Munguia's name had been revealed, it would not be allowed. Lou DiBella, Derevyanchenko's promoter, petitioned the IBF to enforce a mandatory. The NSAC called the fight less than a month before the match date, meaning it will not be held at the MGM Grand. Golovkin will still fight on May 5th, according to Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times, but the match will be held on regular HBO at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Vanes Martirosyan, a former light middleweight world champion and a California native, has been a front runner to face Golovkin in 21 KOs. The IBF said they would not sanction their belt if the event was made, and Golovkin's name could possibly be stripped of his title. Martirosyan was branded as an enemy because he had been a career light middleweight, he was going through a loss and hadn't fought in two years. Martirosyan was accepted by the WBC as a late replacement candidate. Martirosyan was confirmed as Golovkin's defamer on April 18th, with the festival being billed as 'Mexican Style 2' at the StubHub Center on May 5th. The IBF said a day later that no Golovkin or Loeffler had requested an exception, but that if and when they did, the IBF would honor the request. The IBF agreed to sanction the match as long as Golovkin makes a mandatory defense against Derevyanchenko by August 3, 2018.

Golovkin knocked Martirosyan out in round 2 on fight night in front of 7,837 fans. Golovkin applied pressure immediately backing Martirosyan against the ropes and landing his jab. Martirosyan had a short success at the end of round 1 after he landed a combination of punches. Golovkin got off to a quick start in round two. He landed a right uppercut followed by a body shot. Martirosyan collapsed face first to the canvas, connecting with nine power shots that were unanswered. Referee Jack Reiss had a complete count. The time of stoppage was 1 minute 53 seconds. Martirosyan described Golovkin's 'empower in the post-war's as 'being struck by a train.' "It feels good to be knocked out," Golovkin said. Vanes is a tenacious fighter. In the first round, he caught me a few times. After being disqualified in the first round, I felt I was out of money in the second round. Golovkin landed 36 of 84 punches (43%) and Martirosyan landed 18 of his 73 (25%). Golovkin's purse for the war was $1 million, but Martirosyan's was less than $225,000. The contest attracted 1,249,000 viewers and astonished 1,361,000 viewers, making it the most watched boxing match on cable television in 2018.

According to Golovkin, a fight against Martirosyan was still a priority going into the fall. During a conference call, he said it was the world's biggest battle" and was beneficial to all sides concerned. Although Golovkin predicted that the rematch had a 10% chance of happening, Eric Gomez and Tom Loeffler decided to meet and begin discussing after May 5th. The purse split was one of the main factors preventing the match from taking place. Varez wanted 65-35 in his favour, the same terms Golovkin accepted initially, but Golovkin wanted a straight 50-50 split.

Golovkin was banned from receiving his IBF world title for non-adherence to the IBF's guidelines on June 6th. The IBF gave Golovkin an exception to fight Martirosyan but did not sanction the fight, but Golovkin's team was told by Golovkin's team that negotiations and combating critical challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko should begin by August 2018. The IBF also published a statement in which it was more elaborate. Golovkin's crew announced on June 7 that they would accept a 55-45 split in favour of lvarez.' Golovkin accepted a 65-35 split in favor of lvarez, despite the initial split in the first rematch negotiations. Golden Boy gave Golovkin a 24-hour deadline to reclaim a 571–43212 split in lvarez's favour or else investigate other wars. Golden Boy were already discussing with Eddie Hearn for a war against Daniel Jacobs at this moment. Loeffler was also working closely with Frank Warren to prepare Saunders with Golovkin for the end of August. Golovkin turned down the bid, but De La Hoya announced that there would be no rematch. Despite this, several reports showed that both sides were still bargaining after a "Hail Mary" suggestion was revealed. De La Hoya announced via Twitter that the terms had been agreed and that the fight would take place on September 15th at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada. Golovkin admitted to ESPN that he had accepted 45%. lvarez began training for the fight on June 14th and announced that he would apply for his boxing license on August 18th. Both boxers would not be able to face one another for the first time until the fight week, according to the boxer's press conference. On July 3, a split-screen press conference took place. Due to a majority vote of the panel, it was announced that The Ring Magazine's vacant middleweight title would be contested for the fight on September 3rd. "We posed the question to the Ratings Panel, which, in a landslide, voted in favor of the magazine's 160-pound championship, which will be up for rematch at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas," Doug Fischer said.

As lvarez defeated Golovkin by a majority decision after 12 rounds in front of a sellout crowd of 21,965, the contest was once more fraught. Judge Dave Moretti and Steve Weisfeld favored him, 115-114, while third judge Glenn Feldman scored it 114-114. Fans, pundits, and journalists disputed the results. Of the 18 media outlets that had scored the match, 10 went in favour of Golovkin, 7 scored a draw, and 1 scored the match for lvarez. The judge's splitting eight rounds showed how close the match was, with the judges dividing eight rounds. All three judges had their scores read 87-84 for lvarez in the 9 rounds.

In terms of combat, the battle was much different from the first one. lvarez, who was described as a 'runner' by Golovkin's team,' changed his appearance and became more vivacious. Both boxers made use of their respective jabs from the opening round, with Golovkin's jab becoming more effective as the match progressed. Both fighters were knocked during the match, with both lvarez and Golovkin displaying strong chins. Despite the intense build-up, both boxers treated each other with respect after the match. Varez made a good use of his body attack, landing 46 points in comparison to Golovkin's landing. Golovkin landed 234 of 879 punches (27%) and Lvarez landed 202 of his 622 punches (33%), according to Compubox Stats. Not once did Golovkin's back touch the ropes in the 12 rounds. Alvarez returned to the ropes twice during the contest. Golovkin defeated Lavarez in eight of the 12 rounds. In this second fight, Harold Lederman finished second, scoring 116-112 in favor of Golovkin, as he did the first.

"I demonstrated my triumph with facts" in the post-fight interviews, translating for lvarez. He was the one who was behind the times. Because I gave a great fight, I feel fulfilled. It was a clear win." "It was a great fight," he continued. But in the end, Mexico was a triumph. And here's the opportunity again. And I want to shout out to my competitor, the best in the boxing world. I am a natural fighter, and I exemplified it on tonight. I'll do it again if the people want another round. But, for the time being, I will enjoy time with my family." Golovkin did not participate in the fight and made his way backstage, where he got stitches for a wound in his right eye. According to the judges, he later reacted angrily to his defeat by saying, "I'm not going to tell who lost tonight because Canelo won the tournament." I thought it was a good match for the fans and very thrilling. I thought I did better than he did." "We had a great fight, the one we aspired the first time around," Golovkin's boss, Abel Sanchez, who had been highly critical of lvarez following the first fight. Going into the 12th round, I had it close. We had good judges who saw it from different angles. I can't be sure about the decision, but it's close enough to warrant a third fight. Canelo was defeated in a epic battle. "Congratulations!" Both fighters were interested in a trilogy.

From 16,732 tickets sold, the fight brought a live gate of $23,473,500. This was lower than the first round, but it was still the fourth largest-grossing gates in Nevada boxing history. The contest attracted 1.1 million PPV subscribers, lower than the first one, but it brought more money to the table at $94 million.

Oscar De La Hoya advised Golden Boy president Eric Gomez to begin negotiating a deal for a third conflict between Golovkin and lvarez in January 2019. Golden Boy had already booked in T-Mobile Arena on May 4th, Cinco De Mayo weekend. Gomez wrote on social media a few days later after preliminary talks with Golovkin's team, he seemed as though Golovkin did not want a third conflict. On January 17, it was announced that lvarez will face Daniel Jacobs in a middleweight unification match.

Golovkin had filed a lawsuit against his former bosses Maximilian and Oleg Hermann, claiming $3.5 million in damages on February 1, according to theblast.com. The Hermann brothers had abused Golovkin financially, with higher percentages and "intentionally failing to account for income" from previous battles, according to the suit. Golovkin was reportedly negotiating a television contract with DAZN, Showtime/FOX, and ESPN at the same time.

Golovkin was close to obtaining a contract, according to Tom Loeffler, who also revealed that he would sign with DAZN. DAZN announced on March 8 that they had signed Golovkin to a three-year, 6-fight contract worth around $100 million, which would see Golovkin combat twice a year on the platform. Golovkin would receive a $30 million reward for a trilogy war against lvarez as part of the deal, according to the tense. The deal went beyond Golovkin's own fights to showcase talent from Golovkin's own promotional company in 2020 and 2021. Golovkin was reportedly given equity in DAZN by his battle purses, according to rumors. Golovkin's first match under the new deal was scheduled for June 2019. Golovkin praised DAZN's global outlook and cited it as one of the main reasons he signed with them.

Golovkin told Golovkin on March 21 that he wanted to fight the best of the middleweight division, regardless of belts. He wanted to finish his education, not chasing titles, but he wanted to be the best middleweight and be the best middleweight. Golovkin confirmed on April 16 that he would face 35-year-old Canadian boxer Steve Rolls (19-0, 10 KOs), in a catchweight of 164 pounds at Madison Square Garden in New York. Brandon Adams (21-2, 13 KOs), Kamil Szeremeta (19-0, 4 KOs), and former world champion Hassan N'Dam were among the candidates to face Golovkin. Adams was then announced that he would face Jermall Charlo (28-0, 21 KOs) rather than Jermall Charlo. Loeffler explained that Rolls was chosen as Golovkin's adversary to raise subscriptions in Canada as Golovkin's competitor to raise subscriptions. Golovkin issued a statement on April 24 announcing that he had broken with longtime trainer Abel Sanchez after nine years. Sanchez told Golovkin, "Greedy and ungrateful," while simultaneously telling ESPN that Golovkin had requested him a pay cut, which he refused. Golovkin revealed Johnathon Banks as his new trainer in May during a press conference. The bank was best known for its ability to prepare former world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. Golovkin weighed 163 pounds, while Rolls came in at 16334 pounds. Golovkin's official purse was valued at $2 million, but it was revealed that he would make more money than he expected. Rolls was paid $300,000.

There was an estimated crowd of 12,357 people in attendance. Golovkin was defeated in round 4 by a knockout. Golovkin started closing the gap on Rolls and seemed to be hurting Rolls with body shots from round 1. Golovkin fought in Round 2 in a similar way, with several clean shots being attempted. In round 2, the Rolls had a number of clean shots, most notably a left hand to the head, which sent Golovkin back. Rolls was feeling Golovkin's ferocity by round four. Golovkin backed Rolls up against the ropes and started throwing with both hands. On Rolls, Golovkin fired a shot to the temple, the same shot he knocked out Marco Antonio Rubio, causing Rolls to cover up. He landed a left hook to Rolls' chin during Golovkin's continuing assault on the ropes, bringing Rolls face first to the ground. Rolls attempted to beat the clock but came to a halt as a result of the ropes. Golovkin was the winner of round 4 when referee Steve Willis called the contest at 2 minutes and 9 seconds. Golovkin was ahead 29–28, 30–27, and 30–27 on all three judges' scorecards after three rounds. "I feel great." Golovkin said in post-fight in-ring interviews. I feel like a new baby. I'm completely different now because I came right back to my knockout. I adore knockouts, and New York is my favorite. [...] The fans know who they want me to fight next, so I'm gearing for September. I'm set for Canelo. Just ask him. I'm set. Please advise him if you want a big drama show." The new trainers were ecstatic with the result. According to CompuBox results, Golovkin landed 62 of 223 punches (28%) and Rolls landed 38 of his 175 thrown (22%).

On December 18, 2020, Golovkin met mandatory IBF challenger Kamil Szeremeta. Golovkin slid Szeremeta to the ground at the beginning of the first round of an uppercut followed by a left hand, establishing his quick jab. In round two, Golovkin was knocked again from a right hand, followed by two more knockdowns in rounds four and seven. The referee walked to Szeremeta's corner and ended the match between rounds seven and eight rounds. According to CompuBox results, Golovkin defeated Szeremeta 228 to 59 and outlanded in jabs 94 to 10. During the contest, Golovkin received 56% of his power punches.

Following multiple rumors of a match between Golovkin and WBA (Super) champion Ryta Murata, the two teams announced on October 27th, 2021, that a deal had been reached between the two teams to stage the match in Saitama, Japan, on November 29th 2021. It was announced on December 2nd, 2021, that the bout was postponed indefinitely due to the removal of restrictions on travel by the rising Omicron variant of Covid-19, which barred foreigners from visiting Japan. The war was eventually postponed for 9 April 2022.

Golovkin lost the contest by unanimous vote with two judges determining the fight 115–113 and the other judge 116–112, all in lvarez's favour.
