Yordany Álvarez Oropeza, also written as Yordanis Álvarez Oropesa, (born 24 May 1985) is a Cuban retired footballer.
Club career
lvarez began his career in Cuba, where he competed with his hometown club, FC Cienfuegos, in the Campeonato Nacional de Ftbol de Cuba.
lvarez, along with several other team members of the Cuban U-23 national team, and several others in the Olympic qualifying tournament in Tampa, Florida, in March 2008, left the country under a wet foot dry foot program that allows Cubans to seek asylum in the United States.
Following a failed trial with Los Angeles Galaxy, lvarez was signed to a USL First Division expansion franchise Austin Aztex after attending the Aztex open tryouts in California in March 2009. In Austin's USL1 season opener against the Minnesota Thunder on April 18, he made his team debut against the team on April 18th. Since signing a three-year contract with the club on January 21, 2010, he renewed his deal. New owners purchased the team and relocated it to Orlando, Florida, renaming it Orlando City SC prior to the 2011 season. In 2011, the club won the USL Pro league for the first time, with lvarez named league Most Valuable Player of the season.
lvarez has signed with Major League Soccer club Real Salt Lake on a loan contract at the end of the 2011 USL Pro season. Salt Lake exercised its right to buy lvarez in January 2012, and he agreed to a three-year deal in February 2012.
It was announced on January 22, 2014, that lvarez had been loaned back to Orlando, SC, for the 2014 USL Pro season, and that the switch would be made permanent in 2015 when the team first started playing in MLS. Real Salt Lake acquired Orlando's 4th round pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft in exchange for lvarez. This contract made Lvarez the second player to join Orlando's MLS roster, second only to Kevin Molino. However, lvarez was forced to leave after a string of tests for a medical disorder he sustained during a match against the Dayton Dutch Lions on September 29, 2014.
He became a mentor t Orlando City's youth academy after retiring as a player.
International career
In a November 2006 CONCACAF Gold Cup qualification match against Surinam, lvarez appeared for the Cuba U-20's and made his senior international debut for Cuba against Surinam, scoring 3 goals and totaling 8 caps. His last international match against Guyana was February 2008, a month before escaping to the United States.
