William Joseph Devane (born September 5, 1939) is an American film, television, and theatre actor best known for his role as Greg Sumner on the primetime soap opera Knots Landing (1983–1993) and as James Heller on Fox serial drama 24 (2005–2007), which he reprised in Live Another Day (2014).
He is also known for his supporting roles in films such as McCabe & Mrs. (1976), Family Plot (1976), Timestalkers (1989) and Space Cowboys (2000).
Early life
Devane was born in Albany, New York, the son of Joseph Devane, who had been Franklin D. Roosevelt's chauffeur when he was Governor of New York. His father was of Irish descent, and his mother had Dutch and German roots. In 1962, Devane graduated from Philip Schuyler High School in Albany, NY, and later the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City.
Personal life
In 1961, Devane married Eugenie Devane. They have two sons. Joshua Devane, one of his sons, is also an actor. Bill Devane, their older son, was killed in an accident.
Career
Devane began his acting career with the New York Shakespeare Festival, where he appeared in 15 plays. In 1966, Devane portrayed Robert F. Kennedy in the off-Broadway parody MacBird. He received acclaim for his work as President John F. Kennedy in the television docudrama The Missile Crisis of October (1974), and then in Emmy Award-winning television series Fear on Trial (1975). On Knots Landing, he is best known for his ten years as the vivacious and hardnosed politician-turned-corporate titan Greg Sumner.
In 1994, Devane appeared in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman as Al Capone. He appeared on CBS' Early Edition (1996-2000) as the lead character's father. Devane appeared in the films McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), 1981; Family Plot (1976), directed by Alfred Hitchcock; The Testament (1982) with Jane Alexander; Hollow Man and Space Cowboys (1999); Exception to the Rule (1999).
On two evening dramas, Devane has played members of the Presidential Cabinet. On The West Wing, he appeared as both Secretary of State and potential Vice President nominee in 2004. Devane appeared in several scenes with Martin Sheen; they also appeared together as President John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert, respectively, 30 years ago in The Missiles of October (1974). He appeared in Chasing the Green in Russ Emanuel in 2008 alongside Jeremy London, Ryan Hurst, and Robert Picardo. In the Jesse Stone mystery films with Tom Selleck, he appears also as police officer and psychologist Dr. Dix. He appeared on "NCIS Episode "Worst Nightmare" as a grandfather who isn't who he seems to be and is really a veteran U.S. deep cover special operations agent, as a child kidnapped from Marine Corps Base Quantico.
Devane first appeared on ABC primetime soap opera Revenge in 2012 as Grandpa Edward Grayson. In the Christopher Nolan film The Dark Knight Rises, Devane played the President of the United States. In the limited-run series 24: Live Another Day, Devane reprised his role as James Heller, now President, after which it premiered in May 2014.
