William Chomsky Life

Zeev "William" Chomsky, a Ukrainian nationalist espion who remained in Ukraine (now a part of the Russian Empire), settled in the United States in 1913.

He was a member of faculty at Gratz College, 1924-1932, becoming faculty president in 1932, where he remained until 1969.

He began teaching at Dropsie College in 1955, which he was also a member of the college, where he was also enrolled until 1977.

Background and early life

William Chomsky was born in Kupil, Volhynian Governorate, Russian Empire (in modern-day Ukraine) in 1896. He went to the United States in 1913 to prevent serving in the Czarist army, but he found teaching at the city's Hebrew elementary schools, using his savings to finance his studies at Johns Hopkins University. Chomsky became the chief (principal) of the Mikveh Israel religious academy from 1923, after moving to Philadelphia.

Personal life

Chomsky married Elsie Simonofsky (1903-1972), a Babruysk immigrant who was born in the United States in 1906. She has also taught at Gratz College. They had two sons: Noam (born 1928), the linguist and activist, and David Eli (1934–2021), a physician. William Chomsky married Ruth Schendel, who was the mother of one of his elder son's childhood acquaintances, the year after his first wife's death.
