Will Grier Career

College career

Grier played with Treon Harris to be Jeff Driskel's backup as a freshman in 2014, but the season ended with him redshirting. In 2015, he competed with Harris to be the starting quarterback. Though Harris played in the first game of the season against New Mexico State, Grier got some playing time by going 18 for 166 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for 43 yards with a touchdown. Grier started his second game against East Carolina by tossing for 151 yards, two touchdowns, and an intercept. He played his best game of his young career against the Ole Miss Rebels on October 3, going 24-of-29 for 271 yards and four passing touchdowns. He threw his four touchdowns in the first half; he was the first Gator quarterback since Chris Leak in 2005 to do so. The Gators won by 38–10 after the match.

Since it was announced that he had tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs, Grier received a one-year suspension, which began on October 12, 2015. The positive results came from the over-the-counter drug Ligandrol, and he was unaware that it was banned, but he admitted that he never followed protocol to start the supplement with team trainers. His appeal was dismissed by the NCAA, and he will not be eligible to return until the sixth game of the regular season in 2016. Grier had intended to transfer to another school, according to Florida on December 19, 2015.

Grier revealed on April 6, 2016, that he was going to West Virginia University. He did not attend the 2016 season because of NCAA transfer rules. Grier was the expected starter for West Virginia going into the 2017 season, but concerns about his future were raised, considering that half of his year-long suspension was related to his transfer waiting time. Grier was granted a waiver by the NCAA on June 20, 2017 and he will play in the season opener against Virginia Tech. Grier threw for 371 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception in his first game with the Mountaineers in a 31–24 loss to Virginia Tech. In a come-from-behind victory over then-No. 4, Grier threw for 352 yards and five touchdowns. On October 14, 24 Texas Tech was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week for the week. Grier left the game against Texas with a broken finger on his throwing hand in the Mountaineer's 11th game of the season. Grier needed surgery on the broken finger and missed the remainder of the season, finishing with 3,490 passing yards and 36 total touchdowns on the year. Grier was named Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year at the end of the season.

Grier said on December 14, 2017 that he would return for his senior season rather than entering the 2018 NFL Draft. He appeared on pre-season watch lists for several national awards, including the Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award, and Davey O'Brien Award. Grier appeared on several preseason lists of potential Heisman Trophy candidates. He was named Preseason Offensive Player of the Year by the conference's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and a preseason first-team all-conference pick at the 2018 Big 12 Media Days.

Grier finished the 2018 season with 3,864 passing yards, 37 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. At the end of the regular season, he was named second-team All-Big 12 for the second time. West Virginia earned an 8-three record in regular season and was invited to the Camping World Bowl; Grier has stated that he would not play in the bowl game in order to prepare for the 2019 NFL Draft. Grier will be named as the top senior student-athlete in this class.

Professional career

In the third round (100th overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft, Grier was drafted by the Carolina Panthers.

Grier would make his first appearance against the Indianapolis Colts in week 16, 2019, on December 16, 2019. Grier threw for 224 yards and three interceptions, as well as rushing for 17 yards during the 38-36 loss. Grier threw for four yards and a pick-six before being forced to leave the game due to a foot injury in the second quarter in Week 17. The Panthers lost the game 42–10.

Grier was released by the Panthers on August 31, 2021.

Grier was spotted by the Dallas Cowboys on September 1, 2021, who was the first to have a waiver.

Grier was waived by the Cowboys on August 30, 2022, and he enrolled in the practice squad the next day. On October 5, he was promoted to the active roster.

Five things we learned from Week 1 of the NFL season: Rodgers needs assistance, the Cowboys season is over, so the Cowboys season is over

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 14, 2022
Week 1 of the NFL season was wild, with major injuries, turnovers galore, and last week's two game-winners giving fans at home unwarranted optimism. And all of that came from the Steelers' overtime match against the Bengals. With the first week of the season, we have already seen upsets, our first (and hopefully last) match of the season, and a slew of game winning field goals. Fans of the Packers, Patriots, and Rams all agreed to bed content, while Packers, Patriots, and Rams fans of the Packers, Patriots, and Boston Browns fell asleep in confusion and/or trepidation. Even though it's way too early to start writing teams or counting them out, we can still learn a lot from this first week of pro football.

Despite thumb surgery, the Dallas Cowboys have decided not to add Dak Prescott to the injured reserve list

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 13, 2022
After repairing his right thumb with surgery, the Dallas Cowboys aren't putting quarterback Dak Prescott (right) on injured reserve, leaving the possibility that he might return in fewer than four games. Prescott, 29, underwent surgery on Monday, a day after being injured in the fourth quarter of a season-opening 19-3 loss at home to Tampa Bay. He was going through after receiving a pass when his right hand bent awkwardly after losing bad contact with rushing linebacker Shaq Barrett's raised hands.

Cooper Rush and Will Grier were recalled by the Cowboys, making Dak Prescott the only quarterback on the roster

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 31, 2022
Teams often chop and change like this in order to maintain flexibility, and the Cowboys will be attempting to assess other players on the roster before playing their first game on September 11. Prescott will almost certainly have insurance for the Cowboys come week 1, either way. 'It's more of a formality right now as you're going through the roster to try to get the best 53 possible,' former Browns QB Brady Quinn said on CBS Sports. 'And then you're worried about the backup quarterback position.'
