Wanda Ventham Life

Wanda Ventham (born 5 August 1935) is an English actress known best for her role as Colonel Virginia Lake in 1970s science-fiction television series UFO, as well as her recurring role as Cassandra Parry's mother Pamela Parry in the sitcom Only Fools and Horses between 1989 and 1992.

She appeared in two episodes of The Saint and two Carry On films as well. People magazine's "Most Beautiful People in the World" issue in April 2014.

Early life

Ventham was born in Brighton on August 5, 1935, the granddaughter of Gladys Frances (née Holtham) and Frederick Howard Ventham. She attended art school for a year as a student at the Connaught Theatre in Worthing, West Sussex, during her school holidays, aspiring to be an artist. The introduction to professional theatre pushed her to abandon art school and pursue a career in acting. She studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama as a descendant of Judi Dench, graduating in 1956.

Personal life

In 1957, Ventham married James Tabernacle, the couple had one child, Tracy. They were divorced on November 12, 1974. She met actor Timothy Carlton in 1970 while filming scenes for the drama series A Family at War, and the two have been married since April 1976. In 1973 and 2004, the couple appeared together in the second series of BBC's Sherlock, and in the third and fourth series of the BBC's Sherlock, where they played the title character's parents, with their son, actor Benedict Cumberbatch, playing Holmes.

Career

Ventham's first film appearance was in My Teenage Daughter (1956), with Dame Anna Neagle and Sylvia Syms. She appeared in On the Beat as a debutante in 1962, and as a nurse in the Norman Wisdom film A Stitch in Time in 1963.

She appeared in Carry On Cleo (1964) and Carry On Up the Khyber (1968). She appeared in the film Death Is a Woman (1966), alongside Mark Burns. In the cult film UFO, she played Col. Virginia Lake, second-in-command to Commander Ed Straker (Ed Bishop).

Along with regular appearances in Heartbeat as Fiona Weston, Hetty Wainthropp Investigates as Margaret Balshaw, and The Rag Trade as Shirley, Ventham's many other television credits include regular appearances in Heartbeat, The Rag Trade as Shirley. She also had a love interest in Arthur Daley in Minder, Susan's mother in Coupling, and Deborah's mother in Men Behaving Badly. She appeared in The Lotus Eaters (1972–73), and made a guest appearance on Rutland Weekend Television (Se1Ep5). Patrick McGoohan was on a scene of Danger Man, and the series The Prisoner, The Unconventional Spy, Executive Stress and Next of Kin, and the sketch series The Two Ronnies followed her.

She has appeared in Doctor Who on three occasions over three decades; as Jean Rock in The Faceless Ones (1967), and as Faroon in Time and the Rani (1987). Denis Lill, with whom she would later appear in Image of the Fendahl (1989-1992), was opposite Denis Lill.

In 2014, she and her husband Timothy Carlton appeared in Sherlock's BBC adaptation as the parents of Sherlock Holmes, who is played by their son Benedict Cumberbatch. Sheilagh Chiltern, the grandmother of Lofty Chiltern, appeared in Holby City as Sheilagh Chiltern.
