Walter Samuel Career

Club career

Samuel began playing in Argentina for Newell's Old Boys in 1996, and a year later, he transferred to Boca Juniors, where he played 103 games and scored five goals in all competitions until 2000. Roma paid his salary in 40.265 billion Italian lire (about €20 million) in that year. He rose to fame as one of Italy's best defenders and earned a nickname to match after winning the Serie A title with Roma in 2001. Real Madrid's Spanish team Real Madrid was attracted by his talent.

In 2004, Real Madrid paid €25 million for his release. Samuel failed to make a splash in Madrid, and he was not the only one at the back that Real sorely needed. He was one of the team's three non-EU citizens, as well as Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos; however, the three players obtained Spanish passports in 2005.

He returned to Serie A in August 2005 with a switch to Internazionale on a four-year deal for a €16 million fee. He began his Internal adventure by winning the 2005 Supercoppa Italiana versus Juventus, a 63rd minute as Nerazzurrri took home extra time thanks to the winner of Verón. He made his league debut for his new team on September 21 by a 1–0 away victory over Chievo on September 13th. Samuel was in a lineup of 11 international players on the field against Petralka on November 24th, with Lur's Figo being the only European. He finished his first season at Inter with 42 appearances in all competitions, with the team winning the championship following Juventus' relegation due to match-fixing, and Coppa Italia triumphing over Roma 4–2 on aggregate, thus ending an unexpected domestic treble.

Samuel died while observing the Brazilian national Kaká, a few weeks later, and he underwent reconstructive surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament. He wasn't expected to be out before the 2007-08 season. In reality, he started training with the first team again in October of the 2008–09 season in October and then secured his first team spot under new boss José Mourinho. On Sunday, he played his first match in more than nine months, leading to a 1–0 home win over Udinese.

Samuel was one of Mourinho's most influential players under the helm of defence for the first time as they gained the Serie A title, Colombo, and the UEFA Champions League, a record treble. In the third Champions League group stage match against Dynamo Kyiv, he scored his first goal of the season; Inter lost 2-0; He headed home a Wesley Sneijder cross to make it 2–2. Inter winless in the UEFA Champions League extended their winning streak to eight games.

Samuel won by 4-3 over Siena on Jan. 9th by beating goalkeeper Gianluca Curci with a left-footed shot. Inter gained the title two points ahead of Roma, but his goal later became more pivotal. In the 3–1 victory over Atalanta on April 24, he played his 100th Serie A game for Inter in the 3–1 win. Samuel ended the season on track with 42 appearances and scoring 4 goals; he was lauded for his defensive performances against Barcelona and Bayern Munich on Inter's road to the Champions League crown.

On November 7, 2010, Samuel sustained a serious knee injury, this time on his other knee. Because of this, he was unable to participate in the 2010 FIFA Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi. He returned to action on May 15th by participating in the last minutes of a 1-1 away draw against Napoli. Samuel expressed his delight in playing his first match in almost six months by remarking: "I'm feeling good and I'm thrilled to have been able to play the last few minutes of this match." "I would like to thank the medical staff for the service they did following my injury, my family's who has always stood by me, and all the followers." He played in all sports for 15 games in the 2010–11 season.

Samuel played his 500th game as a professional in Roma's 4–0 loss. He signed a new one-year deal with the club, extending his Inter career career spans to eight years. Samuel scored within three minutes in the derby versus Milan on October 7, resulting in the winning goal, indicating that Samuel has won all ten derbies that he has played. Samuel renewed his deal for another season in June 2013, what would be his last season. On February 9, 2014, he scored his first goal of the season, a header that brought the winner of the match against Sassuolo for his first victory of 2014.

Samuel wore the captain armband for the first time on February 15, 2014, beating Fiorentina 2–1 due to Javier Zanetti and Esteban Cambiasso's being on bench. In a 4–0 victory over Sampdoria in April 2014, his team lost the club's last game. Samuel left the club at the end of the 2013-14 season, winning 13 trophies in nine years. His last game for the club came on May 10th, 2014, in a 4–1 home victory over Lazio, which earned the team a spot in the UEFA Europa League next season.

Samuel signed a one-year deal with Basel in the Swiss Super League after nine seasons with Inter. In the 3–1 home victory over Young Boys on August 31, he made his first appearance in a league match. The Basel 2014–15 Super League season was a huge success. For the sixth time in a row, they lifted the championship and advanced to the final of the 2014-15 Swiss Cup, losing 0–3 to FC Sion in the final. Paulo Sousa Samuel, a trainer, appeared in 26 games in the 13 League, 1 Cup, 4 Champions League, as well as eight in test games. In those games, he scored two goals.

Samuel extended his basel contract for another year in June 2015, but in October, he announced his intention to retire at the end of the 2015–16 season due to physical inability. During the 1–0 away victory over Lech Pozna on December 10, 2015, he made his 100th appearance in UEFA's club competition appearance for them in the final match of the 2015–16 UEFA Europa League group stage.

Urs Fischer Samuel, the training manager, won the Swiss Super League championship with Basel at the end of the 2015–16 Super League season for the second time. Samuel played his last game of his career against the Grasshoppers on May 25, 2016, at the age of 38.
