Walter Salles Career

Film career

Terra Estrangeira (Foreign Land), Salles' first notable film, was released in Brazil in 1995. Film journalists and a minor box-office success made it highly coveted locally, and over 40 film festivals around the world selected it.

Central do Brasil (Central Station) received widespread international recognition and two Academy Awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role and Best Foreign Language Film in 1998. Salles received a Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film, becoming the first Brazilian to win a Golden Globe.

Abril Despedaçado (Behind the Sun), based on a book by Albanian author Ismail Kadare and starring Rodrigo Santoro, was nominated for the Best Foreign Film Golden Globes in 2001. "There was one book that rang true to the point where I couldn't get it out of my mind," Salles said. And that was 'Broken April' by Ismail Kadare.' My younger brother, who wrote the book, said, 'If I know you well, it will touch you.' "The struggle between the atavistic violence depicted in the book and the likelihood that such violence would be overpowered by poetry and literature, and eventually by brotherly love" was what struck me.

Both films were directed by veteran Arthur Cohn and had worldwide distribution.

Salles was named as one of the Top 40 Directors in the World in 2003 by The Guardian. Diarios de Motocicleta (The Motorcycle Diaries), a 2004 film about young Ernesto Guevara, who later became known as Che Guevara, has been his greatest international success. It was Salles' first foray as the producer of a film in a foreign language other than his native Portuguese (Spanish in this case) and it became a big box-office hit in Latin America and Europe.

In 2005, Salles released Dark Water, his first Hollywood film based on the 2002 Japanese film of the same name. He also contributed to the creation of the Argentine picture Hermanas, which was also a big success.

Salles wrote and directed a segment in the French film "Paris, I love you" with Daniela Thomas in 2006. The film is a series of 18 shorter segments directed by various 21 directors and set in different arrondissements of Paris. "Loin du 16e" -- literally: "Far from the 16th"), Salles' segment "Loin du 16e" (literally: "Far from the 16th") took place in Paris's 16th arrondissement.

In the 60th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival, Salles took part in a similar project called To Each His Own Cinema (French: Chacun son cinéma). "A 8 944 kilometers de Cannes" was a 3-minute segment on "A 8 944 km from Cannes" (English: 5,557 Miles From Cannes).

Salles wrote and directed Linha de Passe in 2008, a collaboration with Daniela Thomas. It's about four brothers from a poor family who must fight to achieve their dreams. He had been nominated for the Golden Palm and Sandra Corveloni was named for the best actress award for her role in this film at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008.

Salles signed a petition in favor of film director Roman Polanski, who was detained in Switzerland in connection with his 1977 arrest in connection with heroin use and raping a 13-year-old teen.

Salles released José Rivera's screenplay version of Jack Kerouac's On the Road in 2012, with Francis Ford Coppola assisting. At the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, the film was nominated for the Palme d'Or.
