Héctor Babenco Career

Career

O Rei da Noite (King of the Night) (1975), starring Paulo José and Marlia Pêra, was his first solo feature film as a producer.

Babenco's Pixote was a international success – A lei do mais fraco (1981). It worries about Brazil's abandoned children. Although it concerns "a pair of boys who form a symbiotic sexual union," E. Ruby Rich's film "should not be shown as an example of how gay desire can be represented, given its sensationalistic and sordid treatment of gay sex as accommodation, substitution, and punishment." Fernando Ramos da Silva, a ten-year-old boy who was discovered in Só Paulo's suburbs, was featured in the film. The film received numerous awards, including Best Foreign Film at the 1982 Golden Globes Awards.

Babenco was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director (1985), the first Latin American to be nominated in this category.

William Hurt, John Lithgow, Raul Julia, Jack Nicholson, Meryl Streep, Tom Berenger, Daryl Hannah, Aidan Quinn, and Kathy Bates were among the most respected American actors of his time.

Babenco was nominated for the 34th Moscow International Film Festival in 2012.

Willem Dafoe stars in My Hindu Friend (2016), his last film. It tells the tale of a film producer close to death.
