Early life
Vinessa Elizabeth Shaw was born in Los Angeles, California, on July 19, 1976, the niece of Larry Shaw and actress Susan Damante. Shaw's father, a Los Angeles resident, is a psychologist and former adjunct professor of psychology at Antioch University. Her family's original surname was "Schwartz," and her ancestry included Jews (from her paternal grandfather), Italian (from her maternal grandfather), German, Irish, English, Mexican, and Swedish. Vinessa, rather than the traditional "a," was a spelling of her grandfather's name, Vincent.
Shaw appeared in a UCLA acting camp short at the age of 10, and then toured with children's folk singer Peter Alsop at age 11. She began her modeling career at the age of 13, and did a little bit of commercial and consulting throughout her earlier career.
Personal life
Shaw was born a Buddhist. During her first year of attending college in 1996, she adopted Nichiren Buddhist philosophy: "I was lonely and depressed, and I had so many questions about life." Every night, I called my dad, who said, "I wanted to go home." Shaw chants daimoku every day and is also a facilitator for the SGI-USA lay Buddhist Association for Peace, Culture, and Education, making him a central practice of Nichiren Buddhism.
Shaw revealed in August 2017 that she is expecting her first child with her partner, Kristopher Gifford (who appeared in 2007 and married in 2017) (whom she first dated in 2007 and met in 2008). Jack, Shaw's son, was born.
Career
Shaw had made her film debut in Home Sweet Home, a little-known 1981 slasher film that dealt with a serial killer threatening a family at Thanksgiving time. She then gained experience in a handful of television roles. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy, Omri Katz, and a young Thora Birch appeared in Disney's 1993 Halloween family film Hocus Pocus. Shaw appeared in a number of independent films in the 1990s.
She enrolled at Barnard College in New York City in 1998 but dropped out to pursue acting but decided against it. Shaw was attending the university when Stanley Kubrick approached her for her role in Eyes Wide Shut, playing a prostitute played by Tom Cruise's character. In a 2008 interview, Shaw said Kubrick was "very influential" to her and that he "was the first one who encouraged her to continue acting." At the time of being cast, she was still attending college and considering alternate career choices. Shaw appeared in a handful of films including the independent 2000 mystery-drama With Sarah Polley and Sean Penn, the slapstick comedy Corky Romano with Chris Kattan; the romantic comedy 40 Days and 40 Nights, playing the feisty ex-girlfriend of Josh Hartnett's character; and a very small role in Woody Allen's Melinda and Melinda.
Shaw's time was limited to low budget and independent films until 2006, when she returned to the big screen in Alexandre Aja's exploitation-horror film The Hills Have Eyes, playing a young mother and her family in a New Mexico desert attack by bloodthirsty mutants. After seeing her appearance in Eyes Wide Shut, director Aja wanted to cast her in the film. "Well, I guess I could be good in it because I'm so afraid of those kinds of horror films." Shaw answered when she wondered why she wanted to be in a horror film. However, this one in particular attracted me because of the filmmakers. I had a strong opinion on it. It's like it's very different, very touching, and heartbreaking because of the characters involved. So that's kind of what made the difference. If you can believe it, it was more of an actor's piece in a horror film." Shaw was included on the official one sheet promotional poster for the film, which was a box-office hit.
Shaw appeared in Russell Crowe and Christian Bale's indie drama film Garden Party, as well as playing a key role in Two Lovers alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Gwyneth Paltrow. In 2008, the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was announced theatrically in February 2009.
In 2013, she played her husband in Side Effects, playing her character opposite Jude Law's character.
