Vanessa Brown (born Smylla Brind, March 24, 1928 – May 21, 1999) was an Austrian-born American actress who was successful in radio, film, theater, and television.
Early life
Brown and her family immigrated to Paris, Austria, in 1937, to avoid persecution by the Nazi regime.
Brown auditioned for Lillian Hellman for a role in Watch on the Rhine within a few years. The youngster, who was fluent in several languages, impressed Hellman, and she was hired understudy to Ann Blyth, who then played Babette on Broadway and in the touring production. She wrote and directed school performances in high school. She graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1949, majoring in English. She worked as a film critic and feature writer for the Daily Bruin, the campus newspaper.
Personal life
Brown was married to Dr. Robert Alan Franklyn, a plastic surgeon from 1950 to 1957. She married television producer Mark Sandrich, Jr., in 1959, and they had two children, David Michael and Cathy Lisa.
She was cremated following her death, and her ashes were returned to her son, David.
