Early career

Garrett began playing the piano at the age of four. She began serious study of the piano under Itoe Akimoto and Yoshie Akimoto's guidance. Garrett is currently working with John Perry. She has been invited to appear at the Killington Music Festival in Vermont as the youngest performer in the festival's 26-year history. In 2012, Garrett attended the Sydney International Piano Masterclass Festival. She has played the violin and ballet since she was two and a half years old.

Career

Garrett appeared in many concerts at the Vianden Music Festival in Luxembourg, and Germany in August 2009 in selected solo and chamber music performances. Umi took first prize at the Second International Chopin Competition in Hartford, Connecticut, with a flawless score from all three judges, and was later invited to perform at Carnegie Hall. Garrett appeared with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops on NPR's From The Top in 2010 and her orchestral debut with the Desert Symphony in Palm Desert, California, where she appeared in Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 109. In A major, there are 23 students. Garrett made her Chinese debut with the Wuhan Symphony Orchestra in 2010 at the age of nine at Wuhan. She was also a recipient of the MusicFest Perugia Scholarship.

Garrett appeared at the Assisi nel Mondo Festival in 2011. Garrett has appeared with the Charlotte Symphony in Florida, the Thayer Symphony in Massachusetts, the Indiana Chamber Orchestra in Indianapolis, and the Missouri Symphony in Columbia. Umi Garrett appeared at The International Piano Stars Festival in Latvia on March 12, being the youngest performer in the festival's history. She appeared at the Assisi nel Mondo Festival again this year.

To visit people in Tohoku, Japan, where the 2011 tsunami occurred, Umi Garrett created the "Kizuna Concert Series" to visit them. In March 2013, she appeared at four concerts in Tohoku. Garrett was invited to appear with the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra in a performance show that was supposed to commemorate the signing of the peace treaty by the United States and Japan in 2015.

Garrett received the fourth prize at the US National Chopin Piano Competition in Miami, Florida, ex aequo with fellow American pianist and Juilliard colleague Chelsea Guo in March 2020. Garrett has been a student in the Juilliard-Columbia dual program since September 2018, learning with Matti Raekallio and Hung Kuan Chen.
