Early life
Naquin attended Klein Collins High School in Harris County, Texas, where he competed for the school's baseball team. For three years he played for baseball. He was twice honoured as All-State, three times honoured as All-District, and three times named All-Greater Houston. Naquin grew up to be a Houston Astros fan.
Amateur career
In the 33rd round of the 2009 Major League Baseball draft, the Baltimore Orioles selected Naquin. Naquin decided to enroll at Texas A&M University in order to play college baseball for the Texas A&M Aggies baseball team after considering joining the Orioles. In 2011, Naquin was named Big 12 Conference Baseball Player of the Year.
Professional career
In the first round of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft, the Cleveland Indians selected Naquin, the 15th overall pick. He signed and made his professional debut with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the Rookie-level New York-Penn League, batting.270 in 36 games.
In 126 total games between the two teams, Naquin played for the Carolina Mudcats of the Class A-Advanced Carolina League and the Akron Aeros of the Class A-Advanced Carolina League and the Akron Aeros of the Class AA Eastern League, scoring.269 with ten home runs, 48 RBIs, and 15 stolen bases. Naquin was assigned to the Arizona Fall League by the Indians in 2013, and he appeared in the Fall Stars Game. Naquin's 2014 season began with Akron, but in July, they suffered a broken hand. He needed surgery and missed the remainder of the 2014 season. He was batting.313 with four home runs and 30 RBIs in 76 games for Akron before his injury. Naquin joined Akron in the 2015 season. In June, the Indians introduced him to the Columbus Clippers of the Class AAA International League. Nevertheless, he was limited to 50 games played with Columbus due to a concussion and soreness in his right hip. Naquin remained at the Indians' plant in Arizona to participate in strength training after the 2015 season. He trained for a spot on the Indians' 25-man roster during spring training in 2016, and was selected to the Opening Day roster. For June and July 2016, Naquin was named American League Rookie of the Month. The Indians defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 after Naquin took a walk-off inside the park home run on August 19.
