Max Stassi Career

Amateur career and draft

Stassi attended Yuba City High School in Yuba City, California. He starred on his school's baseball team and was named twice as The Sacramento Bee's Player of the Year. Stassi also competed for the United States national baseball team, winning gold in the 2006 Pan American Games in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, and the International Baseball Federation's 16 and Under Baseball World Championship in 2007. He had a.514 batting average, 40 home runs, and 162 runs batted in during his high school career. Stassi decided to play college baseball for the UCLA Bruins at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Stassi is the best available high school catcher in 2009, according to Sporting News' draft. Stassi made it clear that he wanted a big signing bonus before committing to a professional contract. Stassi, a potential first round pick, was not chosen in the first three rounds of the draft, which Baseball America called "one of the biggest surprises" of the draft. Stassi was selected in the fourth round of the draft by the Oakland Athletics, who received the 123rd overall pick. For canceling his pledge to UCLA, he received a $1.5 million compensation, a record for a fourth round pick. In addition, Stassi announced in his employment that the Athletics would invite him to spring training with the major league team in 2010.

Professional career

Stassi played for the Vancouver Caneers of the Class A-Short Season Northwest League, hitting.280/.345/.360. In 2010, he was drafted to the Kane County Cougars of the Class A Midwest League, where he batted.229/.380.380.

In 2011, Stassi played for the Stockton Ports of the Class A-Advanced California League, batting.331/.331, but he missed the season due to shoulder surgery. In 2012, the Athletics welcomed him to spring training. In 84 games with Stockton during the 2012 season, he batted.268 with 15 home runs and 45 RBIs.

With Brad Peacock and Chris Carter, the Athletics moved Stassi to the Houston Astros on February 4, 2013. Fernando Rodriguez and Jed Lowrie were traded. In 2013, Stassi scored in five consecutive games for the Corpus Christi Hooks of the Class AA Texas League. In July, he was voted the Texas League's Player of the Week twice and was named the Texas League's Player of Month for July.

On August 20, 2013, the Astros promoted Stassi to the majors to act as a backup to Jason Castro after the Astros put Carlos Corporán on the disabled list. He had two hits on his first appearance in baseball that day. Stassi was struck in his second MLB game by a 96 mph (154 km/h) fastball, resulting in his placement on the disabled list. Since the bases were loaded at the time he was plunked, he scored his first major-league RBI. Stassi was a member of the Oklahoma City RedHawks of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League in 2014. He played in four runs in seven games played for the Houston Astros on the season, batting.350 (7-for-20) and driving in four runs.

Before being promoted to the big leagues in August due to an injury to Castro, Stassi played for the Fresno Grizzlies of the PCL in 2015. He appeared in 11 games for the Astros. Stassi made spring training in 2016 to be the back-up to Castro after the offseason trade of Hank Conger. He underwent surgery in March on a fractured hamate bone in his left wrist. In May, the Astros activated Stassi from the disabled list and optioned him to Fresno, where he batted 230/.294/.374.

In March 2017, the Astros cut Stassi from their 40-man roster. He played for Fresno before being drafted by the Astros to the major leagues when Brian McCann was hurt on August 14. On August 25, Stassi went on the disabled list with left hand inflammation exacerbated by a blister. In 14 games in 2017, Stassi had 2 home runs and 4 RBIs, along with a batted.167/.458. When the team went on to win the 2017 World Series, Stassi was not on the team's postseason roster.

In 2018, Stassi was added to the Astros' Opening Day roster as a back-up to McCann. He batted 226/.316/.394 in 221 at bats in 2018. In the 9th inning of a blow out loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, Stassi came into the game as pitcher.

Stassi appeared in 29 games with only 15 hits in 90 at-bats with one homerun and three RBIs in 2019.

The Astros traded Stassi to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for minor leaguers Rainier Rivas and Uceta.

He led major league catchers in stolen bases allowed in 2020, with 32, in 31 games. He hit.278 on the offensive with 7 home runs and 20 RBI.

After hitting.455 (10-for-22) with three home runs, three doubles, eight RBIs, and a 1.478 OPS in five games for the first week, Stassi received the American League Player of the Week Award on June 14, 2021.
