Tsugawa Masahiko Career

Career

Tsugawa was born in Kyoto, Japan, on January 2, 1940. He made his debut in the K Nakahira film Crazed Fruit in 1956 after being a boy. Tsugawa's family was heavily involved in the film industry long before his birth. Tsugawa lived at school until being forced to attend Waseda University Graduate School to pursue acting alone.

He steadily rose in fame by playing villains in television jidaigeki drama series as Hissatsu's aspirations, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. He was later chosen as one of director Juzo Itami's most popular actors, and went on to appear in virtually every one of his films since Tampopo.

Tsugawa portrayed Tokugawa Ieyasu five times in television. In the 2000 Aoi Tokugawa Sandai, he played Ieyasu, making him the oldest actor to play a leading role in the Taiga story.

Tsugawa's film Nezu no Ban debuted as a director under the pseudonym Makino Masahiko. He chose this name because he is the nephew of Japanese director Masahiro Makino, his mother's brother. The legend claims that Tsugawa was so captivated by the director while watching him at work as a young child that he asked if he could use Makino as his last name if he were to be a director because of the first names' similarities.

Tsugawa is a product of an illustrious film family. Hiroyuki Nagato, his older brother, was an actor. Yukiji Asaoka, his wife, was a film actress. His grandfather, Shz Makino, his uncle, Kunitar Sawamura, and his mother, Tomoko Makino, were both actors. Sadako Sawamura and Daisuke Kat's uncle and uncle through his father are the actors.

Tsugawa died on August 4, 2018 after suffering from heart failure. He was 78 years old when he died.
