Trevor Ricardo Nelson, MBE, (born 7 January 1964) is a British DJ and host.
Early life
Nelson, who was born in Hackney, to a family of St Lucian origins, attended Central Foundation Boys' Grammar School (now known as Central Foundation Boys' School) in Cowper Street, London EC2, and Westminster Kingsway College. His first job was in a shoe store, but his obsession with music led to a part-time gig as a DJ.
Nelson began daytime work at a record importer in 1985 and broadened his DJ experience by staging "warehouse parties" at the weekends.
He moved to A&R for Cooltempo and EMI, supporting artists such as D'Angelo, Mica Paris, and Lynden David Hall, as well as advertising shows, including "The Lick."
Personal life
Nelson, a single divorced father of two children and cat, lives in London and is a Chelsea F.C. fan. He also has a home in Saint Lucia.
In 2002, he was named Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his service to the Millennium Volunteers Programme.
Nelson currently owns and promotes his touring club brands, including 'Soul Nation' & Classics, which were released at Ministry of Sound, outside of Radio broadcasting.
Radio career
Nelson began his broadcasting career on London's Kiss FM, originally a pirate radio station, in 1985, and after it obtained a licence in 1990, it became a pioneer in the urban music scene. Nelson was both a daytime DJ and producer. Nelson came from Soul II Soul and appeared at several club nights, including Lick. Nelson, who worked behind the scenes at Cooltempo, EMI, was instrumental in the careers of D'Angelo, Mica Paris, and Lynden David Hall. Nelson took to BBC Radio 1 in 1996 to host the first national RNB show The Rhythm Nation, a year later, he began a Saturday afternoon program that culminated in him winning the MOBO Award in 1997 as Best DJ. Nelson was on Radio 1 from 2004 until 2013.
Nelson is now available on two radio stations. He appeared on BBC Radio 1Xtra from Monday to Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 13:00 on BBC Radio 1Xtra, and in July 2016, he started presenting Rhythm Nation, relocating his Wednesday evening soul show to BBC Radio 2 in 2007.
Nelson's weekday 10 am – 1 pm show on 1Xtra would be cancelled and moved to Saturday and Sundays, 4 – 7 p.m., showcasing the best in current and old R&B music, with DJ Ace taking over the slot. He has been in this slot since 2011, after missing the 1Xtra breakfast exhibition with Gemma Cairney and then Zena McNally.
At the Sony Radio Academy Awards in 2010, he was given the special gold lifetime achievement award for his contributions to broadcasting.
