Career
Trevor McDonald was born in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago, on August 16, 1939, to Josephine and Lawson McDonald. McDonald is of Dougla origins, his mother being of African descent, and his father being of Indian descent.
McDonald began working in Trinidad in the 1960s as a print and broadcast journalist, but BBC Radio introduced him as a producer, headquartered in London but also broadcasting to the Caribbean. He began his long association with Independent Television News as a general reporter and was also ITN's first black reporter. Later in life, McDonald became a sports reporter, but he stayed on international politics. He spent some time with the ITN-produced Channel 4 News in the 1980s, but in 1989, he returned to ITV, broadcasting the early-evening news.
McDonald was introduced in 1992 as the sole presenter of News at Ten and became a well-known celebrity on British television screens. Since News at Ten was axed in 1999, McDonald stayed with ITN, until he now hosts the new ITV Evening News. On January 22, 2001, News at Ten was briefly revived, with McDonald returning as a host. Following News at Ten's second dismissal, he presented the ITV News at 10.30 p.m.
McDonald hosted ITV's top current affairs show Tonight with Trevor McDonald from 1999 to 2007. The show was revived in 2010 with host Julie Etchingham.
On December 15, 2005, McDonald issued his final ITV News bulletin. After more than 30 years with ITN, he resigned as anchor, but said he had no plans to retire completely from television. McDonald told his ITN colleagues that he wanted a low-key departure after seeing Tom Brokaw and Dan Rather's departures in the United States. At the end of the program, he signed off the words: "They're good guys."
The November 1992 to March 1999 News at Ten theme was used in honor of McDonald's last bulletin.
ITV announced on October 31 that McDonald would come out of retirement early in 2008 to introduce the relaunched News at Ten with Julie Etchingham.
McDonald would step down from News at Ten until the 2008 US presidential election was over, and Mark Austin would take his place. His last bulletin was on November 20th, 2008. At the time, it was announced that he would continue to provide links for Tonight.
