Trent Williams Life

Trent Williams (born July 19, 1988) is an American football offensive tackle for the Washington Redskins of the National Football League (NFL).

He played college football at Oklahoma, where he was recognized as an All-American, and was drafted by the Redskins fourth overall in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Williams is considered to be one of the best tackles in the league, making seven straight Pro Bowl appearances between 2012 and 2018.

Early years

Born and raised in Longview, Texas, Williams attended Longview High School, where he played for the Longview Lobos high school football team and was teammates with Malcolm Kelly, Chris Ivory, and Robert Henson. Williams was a unanimous first-team all-district selection as a senior. Longview entered the 2005 UIL playoffs on a 10–0 season record, but lost 14–13 to Nick Florence's South Garland. He was also on the track team as a shot putter. Considered a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, Williams was listed as the No. 28 offensive guard prospect in the nation. He chose Oklahoma over offers from Louisiana State, Oklahoma State, and Texas A&M.

Personal life

Williams is friends with running back Adrian Peterson. The two were teammates at the University of Oklahoma in 2006 and for the Redskins in the late 2010s. Williams and Peterson also co-own a gym in Houston.

Williams' nickname is "Silverback", named after the male gorilla. Williams has a large gorilla tattoo on his back and owns gorilla art and an expensive bejeweled gorilla keychain. At the 2010 NFL Draft, he was introduced by league commissioner Roger Goodell with the moniker, after Williams dared Goodell to do it.

Williams is the subject of a documentary called Silverback, which debuted in December 2021 and covered his comeback from a life-threatening sarcoma on his scalp.

Trent Williams Career

College career

Williams attended the University of Oklahoma and spent time with Oklahoma Sooners football team coach Bob Stoops from 2006 to 2009. Williams, who was playing as a true freshman, was the starter at right tackle right before the Missouri game in late October 2006, after Branndon Braxton went down with a broken leg. Williams played 462 snaps, had 75 knockdowns, and was named to the Sporting News Freshman All-America second team.

Williams played in all 14 games and had six starts at right tackle, sharing time with Branndon Braxton in his sophomore year. He started all 14 games as a freshman in 2008, the first at left tackle and the remaining 13 at right tackle, with 131 knockdowns. He was a member of the mighty 2008 Sooners offensive line that featured Duke Robinson, Phil Loadholt, and allowed only 11 sacks all season, the third lowest total number for any team in the country. Two teams that finished above them (Air Force and Navy) attempted 231 passes. Oklahoma tried 476 people and—featuring quarterback Sam Bradford and running back DeMarco Murray — became the highest-scoring team in the modern era (702 points).

Williams was ranked at No. 6 as the sole holdover from the 2008 offensive line. 2 is a preview from Rivals.com's 2009 preseason offensive tackle power ranking. He was also listed on the 2009 Outland Trophy watch list. Despite missing the regular season finale due to injury, Williams led Oklahoma with 102 knockdown blocks and 885 plays and was named an All-American by the American Football Coaches Association.

Professional career

Williams was dubbed one of the best offensive tackles in the 2010 NFL Draft, and drew comparisons to Jamal Brown (who coincidently, will also join the Redskins the same offseason via trade). "Williams will be a first-round pick and will be a long-time starter in the NFL," Gil Brandt of NFL.com writes.

Williams was drafted fourth overall by the Washington Redskins and agreed to a six-year, US$60 million deal on July 30, 2010. Williams was made an offensive co-captain alongside veteran teammate Santana Moss in 2011. After failing multiple drug tests in Week 14, Williams and teammate Fred Davis were banned for four games.

During Williams' first 2012 preseason match against the Buffalo Bills, he sustained a bone bruise in his left foot. Despite the injury, he started in the next two preseason games and was fully recovered by the season's opener against the New Orleans Saints. His coworkers voted for him to be the offensive team captain again at the start of the season. In the Redskins' Week 3 game against the Cincinnati Bengals, he suffered a right knee injury early. Williams had another bone bruise after undergoing an MRI exam the next day, so it was confirmed. He was able to participate in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' next game. Despite being hospitalized throughout the season, Williams made his best appearance in 2012 and was selected for the 2013 Pro Bowl, but he was unable to participate in the Pro Bowl due to a nightclub brawl. Williams struck Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman in the face during the Redskins' wild card playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks on January 6, 2013. For the offence, he was fined $7,875.

Williams accused umpire Roy Ellison of swearing at him during the game, which was backed by several of his teammates. Ellison was suspended by the NFL for one game. Despite the Redskins' poor year as a team, Williams was chosen as the team's only player on the 2014 Pro Bowl team.

Williams went from a playing weight of 345 to 318 pounds during the 2015 offseason. On August 29, 2015, he committed to a five-year, $66 million deal extension with a five-year, $66 million guarantee. Williams was suspended four games for breaching the NFL's substance abuse policy on November 1, 2016. Despite missing the games, Williams was named to his fifth straight Pro Bowl, and his first appearance in a second-team All-Pro was unveiled. Williams played in ten games in 2017 before being forced to return from a knee injury for the bulk of the season, and he was placed on injured reserve on December 22, 2017. Despite the injury, Williams was named to his sixth straight Pro Bowl.

Williams underwent surgery in April 2019 to remove a growth from his head that had been identified as dermatofibrosarcoma progenita (DFSP), a form of cancer. The increase was first noticed in 2013, with him claiming that the Redskins medical staff told him that it was not important at the time. He did not attend the team's mandatory mini-camp and is accused of asking to be released or fired based on how the team's medical staff treated the situation back then. Williams was placed on the Redskins' reserve list on July 27, 2019. On October 30, 2019, the Redskins refused to trade him before the trade deadline. Williams, on the other hand, failed to pass a physical examination because of his scalp's postoperative pain, which culminated in the Redskins putting him on the non-football injury list. He and his agent were given permission to move to another team in March 2020.

In honor of the franchise's 90th anniversary, Williams was inducted into Washington's 100 Top Players list on September 1, 2022.

Williams was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft on April 25, 2020. Williams was reunited with San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, who previously worked as the Washington Redskins' offensive coordinator. Williams was activated two days later on the team's reserve/COVID-19 list and was activated on November 4, 2020. On November 20, he was added to the COVID-19 list and reactivated on November 28. After suffering an elbow injury against the Arizona Cardinals last week, Williams was placed on injured reserve on January 1, 2021. Since earning a 91.9 PFF rating, Williams was admitted to his eighth Pro Bowl, which ranked first at his position in 2020.

Williams agreed to a six-year, $138.06 million contract extension with the 49ers on March 23, 2021, making him the NFL's highest-paid offensive lineman. His deal includes a $55.10 million guarantee as well as a 30.10 million signing bonus.

Daniel Akinkunmi, a London-born boy, once dreamed of playing basketball, but now the three-star OL hopes to forge his own path in Oklahoma: 'I love the greats but I want to be one of the future's best athletes.'

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 4, 2024
INTERVIEW BY PETER CARLINE: Daniel Akinkunmi jumped at the opportunity to follow in Trent Williams' footsteps. However, the three-star offensive lineman is determined to travel to Oklahoma. In preparations for the All-American game, the east Londoner turned on his heads. Akinkunmi, who stands at 6ft 5in and 305 pounds, will play across the offensive line, but it's unclear where his future lies. I'm used to all five positions,' he says. I like playing tackle a lot, and that's where I'll be playing at Oklahoma.'
