Travis Hamonic Life

Travis Hamonic (HAM-nik), born August 16, 1990), is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman currently playing for the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League (NHL).

In the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, he was drafted 53rd overall by the New York Islanders.

Personal life

Hamonic, a descendant of Metis, grew up on Hamonic Farms in Manitoba, mostly farming with his father, and discovered ice hockey at the age of five. Gerald Ferguson, his father, died as a result of a big heart attack when he was ten years old. Hamonic and his family immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he continued to thrive at hockey a year after that. It was his escape from the thoughts of losing his father, according to him. He grew up in a religious family, and during his time with the Islanders, he wore number 3 as a sign of the Holy Trinity (although Hamonic wore number 36 during his rookie season with the Islanders and later in Vancouver as number 27). In the Name of the Father, an inspiring segment on Hamonic's tale, ESPN2's E:60 produced a documentary about him.

Travis Hamonic Career

Playing career

Hamonic began his major junior hockey career with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League (WHL). In the second round, 53rd overall, of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, he was selected by the New York Islanders.

Hamonic was named co-captain of the Warriors ahead of the 2009–10 WHL season, alongside Jason Bast. Hamonic was drafted by the Brandon Wheat Kings to start his junior season on January 9, 2010.

Hamonic signed a three-year entry-level deal with the Windsor Spitfires following a Memorial Cup Championship Final loss to the Windsor Spitfires on May 26, 2010.

Hamonic made his NHL debut on November 24, 2010, despite losing in overtime against the Columbus Blue Jackets. He scored his first NHL goal against Ondej Pavelec of the Atlanta Thrashers on February 1, 2011 and ended the season with a respectable rookie record of five goals and 26 points in 62 games.

Hamonic was the only Islanders player to have a positive plus-minus rating in his first two seasons. Hamonic returned to the Islanders' affiliate in Bridgeport, where he scored ten points in 21 games in the midst of the 2012–13 NHL lockout. Hamonic was rewarded with a seven-year, $27 million contract extension by the Islanders following the 2012-2013shortened season, in which he helped the Islanders return to the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Hamonic had requested a transfer specifically to Western Canada early in the 2015-16 NHL season due to family reasons. GM Garth Snow had known since before the season began, but was unable to strike an agreement that satisfied the Islanders' needs while still accommodating Hamonic's request. Hamonic had rescinded his trade offer, revealing his desire to remain an Islander amid the news that his family's situation had been "stabilized" following the playoffs.

Hamonic was voted as an alternate captain for the forthcoming season on October 12, 2016.

Travis Hamonic was traded from the New York Islanders to the Calgary Flames for a first-round draft pick (used on Noah Dobson) and two second-round draft picks on June 24, 2017. Hamonic was nominated for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy on April 23, 2018 as a player who best exemplifies leadership abilities both on and off the ice, as well as giving back to his families in his community.

Following the Flames' 2018-19 season opener loss to the Vancouver Canucks on October 3, 2018, Hamonic was placed on injured reserve to recover from a facial fracture. On October 25, he was activated from the injured reserve. Hamonic announced on July 10, 2020 that he did not participate in the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs due to questions over the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hamonic, the Flames' free agent, remained unsigned in training camp for the shortened 2020–21 season. He accepted an invitation to the Vancouver Canucks training camp on a professional tryout basis on January 4, 2021. Hamonic agreed to a one-year, $1.25 million contract with the Canucks on January 12, 2021, just days after coming to an end of camp.

The Canucks traded Hamonic to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a 2022 third-round pick on March 20, 2022.
