Club career
Morley was born in Ormskirk and attended Ormskirk and District Schools. In July 1969, he first began as an apprentice with Preston North End before turning professional in August 1972. He went across Lancashire to join Burnley in February 1976 for a £100,000 fee. In June 1979, he joined Aston Villa for £200,000.
Morley, a nippy winger, spent his best days at Villa Park. He was seen as a wayward genius but under new circumstances, Ron Saunders transformed him into one of the most unpredictable players around. He was known for scoring spectacular goals, especially one against Everton at Goodison Park, where he ran at the defense until striking right foot from outside the penalty box to the top left corner of the net. For 1980–81, this goal earned him the 'Goal of the Season' award.
He was instrumental in the Villa team's victory in 1980-81 and the European Cup the year after. Peter Withe was set up for the winning goal against Bayern Munich in the final thanks to his outstanding dribble and cross. His full Villa record was 170(+10) appearances, 34 goals.
He was transferred from Villa to local rivals West Bromwich Albion after adding a European Super Cup Winners' medal to his collection. He spent two seasons at Birmingham City, including briefly going on loan to another Midlands club, Birmingham City. He had a somewhat nomadic career from then on, joining Seiko, Den Haag (with whom he won a runners-up medal in the Dutch Cup), a return to West Brom, a brief stint on loan to Burnley, Tampa Bay Rowdies, before finishing his career at Hamrun Spartans.
International career
Morley earned six caps for England, but his career fell into decline after not being selected for any of their games at the 1982 World Cup. Despite the fact that England boss Ron Greenwood allegedly supported attacking football, he was apparently in favour of attacking football. He failed to score in any of his six senior appearances for England, his first cap against Hungary came on November 18th, 1981, and the last came almost exactly a year later as he took to the field against Greece, which England defeated 3–0. Morley was not selected for the England squad for the 1982 World Cup in Spain, with Greenwood opting for Arsenal's Graham Rix instead.
