Tony Meehan Life

Daniel Joseph Meehan (March 1943 – November 28, 2005) was a founding member of the British group The Drifters, alongside Jet Harris, Hank Marvin, and Bruce Welch, which would later become The Shadows.

He played drums on early Cliff Richard and the Shadows' hits as well as on early Shadows instrumentals. Meehan's many followers and acquaintances in the British pop/rock music industry affectionately referred to him as "The Baron."

He is said to have inspired many thousands of teenage boys and adolescents to pursue music as a profession, including Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac as a result of Cliff Richard's classic film role in Young Ones.

His drumming style (cf. ).

Bongo Blues, Apache), is noticeably different from other drummers recruited by the Shadows during 1958–2010, such as Brian Bennett, Clem Cattini, and Trevor Spencer, preferring a simpler 1950s jazz style kit to a voluminous 1970/80s rock/metal drum set.

His kit was therefore considerably more spartan in terms of drums and accessories than Brian Bennett's new expansive drum kits through the decades.

In his contribution to Themselves Meehan's 1961 book The Shadows, he gives some extremely useful, timely, and helpful tips to all prospective drummers on drum-kit care and maintenance.
